Charles J.P. Gallagher, 89, of Utica, was reunited with his beloved wife, Doris, on February 13, 2015. Born in Oriskany Falls on June 14, 1925, Charles was the son of Thomas William and Mary Gertrude Carney Gallagher. His early years were spent there, attending school in Oriskany Falls and Madison. When his family relocated to Utica he continued his education at St. Francis de Sales, where he and Doris met. They married April 17, 1944 and not long after he shipped out to the ETO. A Corporal in the 3rd Army, 80th Infantry Division, 319 Regiment, he served under General George S. Patton, participating in several major campaigns across Europe including the Battle of the Bulge (Ardennes). A highly decorated WWII veteran, he recently was the recipient of the French Medal of Honor for his service in liberating that country. Upon returning home, he pursued a career in printing and newspaper production. Starting as an apprentice printer, he advanced to spend many years as the Production Director of the Utica Observer Dispatch/Daily Press. Embracing the potentials of emerging technologies, he pioneered the use of lasers and computers in developing the first computer-to-plate complete pagination in newspaper production. Recognized as an expert and innovator within the printing industry, he represented Gannett speaking at many newspaper/print media conferences worldwide. He also shared his insight and knowledge with the next generation of print production professionals, a guest lecturer at universities in Australia and here at home. On retiring, he and Doris continued to enjoy their love of travel, history and nature often traveling cross country with friends in their RV. Charles was an avid sportsman, enjoying hunting and fishing; a gifted amateur photographer and golfer. He was multi-talented in skills such as carpentry, mechanics, electricity and plumbing. A devout Roman Catholic, Charles began his faith journey under his parents at St. Joseph's Parish, Oriskany Falls. In Utica, he was an active parishioner and parish council member as well as a Eucharistic minister. In more recent years he has been a parishioner of St. Bernard's Church, Waterville, where his mother's family practiced. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, he will be greatly missed, but his love, wisdom and values will continue to influence and live on in those whose lives he touched. Charles is survived by four daughters and three sons-law: Mary Charleen and Anthony George, Doris and Terrence Gibbons, Margaret and Thomas Garry, Therese Ann Gallagher; two sons and daughters-in-law: Terrance and Elba Gallagher and Charles and Kellie Gallagher; 15 beloved grandchildren: Capt. Patrick (Jean) Gibbons, USN, Catherine (Christopher)Clement, Mary Gibbons, Maureen (Cesar) Varela, Colleen (Sean) Corrigan, Daniel (Emily) Garry, Maryanne (John) Lannan, Sarah Garry, Elba (Joel)Davis, Jessica (Lee) Wolf, Amy (Michael) Agliata, Rebecca (Kevin) Kosmac, Brittany Gallagher, Evan Gallagher, and Ian Gallagher; 26 cherished great-grandchildren: Chelsea, Guinevere and Griffin Meador, Conner, Michael and Joseph Clement, Ryan, Vivien and Emily Gibbons, Alec Varela, Ryan, Matthew, Jack and Liam Corrigan, Thomas, Claire, and Patrick Garry, Sean Lannan, Samuel, Jonathan and Matthew Wolf, Ethan, Jack and Elliot Davis, Anna Maria and Antonio Agliata; one sister-in-law, Dolores Butler. In addition to his wife Doris, Charles was predeceased by his sister and her husband, Mary Elizabeth and Raymond Zoeckler, and his sister-in-law, Mary Lou Gallagher. His brother, Thomas C. Gallagher, passed away soon after Charles on February 13, 2015. Mr. Gallagher's funeral will be held Thursday, February 19, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. from the Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica, and at 11:30 a.m. at St. Bernard's Church, Stafford Ave., Waterville, where his Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Richard V. O'Neill, who is a personal friend. Interment will take place in St. Bernard's Cemetery, Waterville in the spring. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on both Tuesday and Wednesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or to the Diocese of Fairbanks, Alaska. The Gallagher family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Roman DeSanctis and Dr. Donald Bloch of Massachusetts General Hospital, who were not only Charles' doctors, but true friends to Charles and his family.
