Douglas F. Schaaf, 85, of Whitesboro passed away on Friday, November 28, 2014 at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center with his loving family by his side. Douglas was born in Utica on July 3, 1929, a son of the late Ernest and Helen (Brennan) Schaaf. He was a 1948 graduate of St. Francis de Sales High School and a 1962 graduate of Utica College. Douglas served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. On May 3, 1953 at Sacred Heart Church, Utica, Douglas was united in marriage to Pauline Szczerba. Douglas started his working career with Utica Plumbing Supply Co. In 1962, he went to work for Weil-McLain Co. relocating to Massachusetts in 1978. After his retirement in 1994, Pauline and Doug returned to Whitesboro. He was a parishioner of Sacred Heart Church until its closing, where he served as an usher, funeral mass altar server and a member of its Holy Name Society and currently was a parishioner at the Church of Sacred Heart and St. Mary Our Lady of Czestochowa, New York Mills. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus #189 Utica, and a past Grand Knight of the Milford Massachusetts Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #1376, New Hartford, the VFW Post #7393, New York Mills, the B.P.O.E. Elks and many organizations in Utica and Massachusetts too numerous to mention. In his earlier years, Doug derived great pleasure in coaching youth basketball. Doug was an avid golfer and was a member of the Senior Knights Golf League for many years. Douglas is survived by his wife, Pauline, his three children, Karen Pettigrew and husband Robert, New York Mills. Linda Metzler, Remsen and Thomas Schaaf, Utica, five grandchildren, Allison Vore and husband David, East Rochester, Erin Metzler, Remsen, Nicole Gudyka and husband Nicholas, New York Mills, Jeffrey Pettigrew, Rochester and Kelly Pettigrew, New York Mills, one great granddaughter, Cadence, a twin brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Marilyn Schaaf, Whitesboro, a brother-in-law, Donald Parda, Deansboro, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Douglas was predeceased by a son-in-law, Richard J. Metzler III, a sister, Lois Parda, a brother and sister-in-law, Ken and Betty Schaaf and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Andrew and Mary Szczerba. Mr. Schaaf's funeral will be held on Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at 9:45 from the Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica and at 10:30 from the Church of the Sacred Heart and St. Mary Our Lady of Czestochowa, New York Mills. Burial will take place in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Whitesboro. Calling hours at the funeral home are Monday from 4 - 7. Those so wishing may make donations to the Strong Memorial Hospital Liver Transplant Unit in Rochester, NY or St. Jude Children's Hospital. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors and nurses in the Intensive Care Unit at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, especially acknowledging Jen, Catherine, and Melissa. The Knights of Columbus will meet at the funeral home Monday evening at 6:30.
