Betty J. Petronella, 85, of Deerfield, passed away at the home of her son and daughter-in-law Joeseph Gary and Barbara Petronella on Thursday, October 9, 2014 surrounded by her loving family after a three year battle with cancer. Betty was born in Solsville, New York, on February 12, 1929, a daughter of Harry and Edith (Williamson) Barnard. Betty married Joseph D. Petronella in Patterson, NJ on October 13, 1950, a blessed union of 60 years until his death in 2010. Betty worked for Hannaford Supermarkets for many years retiring in 2005. Betty was an avid Mets fan. She especially loved watching the Lawrence Welk show and Wheel of Fortune. In her spare time she enjoyed doing crossword puzzles. Betty is now happy to be reunited with her beloved husband Joe and son Jeffrey, who she missed so dearly thru the years. Betty is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Suzan and John Patterson, Clinton, four sons and daughters-in-law, John (Mickey) and Rose Petronella, Deerfield, Joseph Gary and Barbara Petronella, Deerfield, Jack and Genevieve Petronella, Owego, and Jody and Deborah Petronella, NC, a daughter-in-law, Brenda Petronella, WI, a sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Bill Gleason, MA, in laws, Harry Kushner, NJ and Claire Cassaletta, Utica, and a special nephew, Francis Thurston, Washington, D.C.. She is also survived by sixteen grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. Betty was predeceased by a son Jeffrey Petronella in 2011, five sisters, Shirley Mauler, Frances Thurston, Phyllis Greco, Alice Nicholson and Ruth Lewis and a brother, Robert Barnard. Mrs. Petronella's funeral will be held on Monday, October 13, 2014 at 10:30 at the Heintz Funeral Home., 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica. Burial will be Carr Cemetery, Marcy. Calling hours at the funeral home are Sunday from 4 - 7. Those so wishing may make donations to Hospice and Palliative Care in Betty's memory. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Alicia DeTraglia and Jen of the Regional Cancer Center of Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare, Tony from VNA and Julie and the Hospice team, especially Anne, for all the loving care they gave to Betty during her illness.
