Obituary of Florence Hagan

Florence Boehlert was born May 27, 1910, daughter of Charles and Elizabeth (Dick) Boehlert. She graduated from St. Agnes School, Utica Free Academy and Utica School of Commerce. On October 12, 1937, she was united in marriage with Lawrence F. Hagan, Sr. in St. Francis de Sales Church by Msgr. David Doody, a blessed union of 61 years until his passing in 1998. In 1939, the Hagans joined the Church of the Sacred Heart, where Florence joined the Women's Club, Mother's Club and Altar Rosary Society. She was a founding member of the Sacred Heart Senior Citizens (later Yorkville Highlanders) and served as its treasurer for 26 years. For over 50 years she has been a member of the Catholic Women's Club, serving on the Board, and for a time as its President. She also belonged to the St. Elizabeth Guild and the Franklin Club. Florence was an enthusiastic member of the Utica Bridge League and the Mohawk Valley Bridge Association, attaining the rank of Silver Life Master. Florence's beloved survivors are one daughter and son-in-law, Regina and C. Thomas Bailey, one son and daughter-in-law, Lawrence and Carmen Hagan, Jr., seven cherished grandchildren and their spouses, John (Mary Jane) Thibault, Jr., Julia (Rob) Gracie, Jessica (Brett) Helmer, Lawrence F. Hagan, III, Charles (Katie) Bailey, Dr. Daniel (Hannah) Bailey, and Dr. Alison (Brad) Helmetsie, eight great grandchildren, John C., Lisa M., Matthew T. Thibault, Vaughn, Elliot and Vivian Bailey, Andrew and Jacob Bailey, many nieces and nephews to the 5th generation, and a host of admired friends. She was predeceased by her beloved daughter, Irene and son-in-law, John Thibault, Sr. For the past year, Florence resided at St. Joseph Nursing Home, where she received excellent physical and spiritual care, for which the family is most grateful. She will be buried from the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes on Tuesday, September 30th at 10:00am. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Calling hours at the Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica will be held on Monday, September 29, 2014 from 4 - 7. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to Hope House, Our Lady of Lourdes Outreach Ministries, or a charity of your choosing.
