Douglas J. Campbell, 87, of Utica, passed away Thursday, June 26, 2014 at the Abraham House in Utica, with his beloved wife by his side. Doug was born May 17, 1927 in Detroit, MI, the son of William P. and Adalaide (Freeman) Campbell. He was raised and educated in Utica. On May 2, 1944, Douglas married Dorothy Pierce in Utica. Dorothy passed away in 1975. Also in 1944, Doug joined the US Navy, serving his country aboard the USS Antietam with the 7th Fleet. After his service, he was employed with the NY Central Railroad for 11 years. He went on to become Food Service Manager with the Utica and Marcy Psychiatric Centers, where he worked for 28 years until his retirement in 1984. On March 10, 1977, Douglas married Eleanor Sansone Bouse in Las Vegas, and enjoyed 37 years of marriage together. He had belonged to several clubs and organizations through the years, currently including the Molson Jones VFW Post 7393 in New York Mills. He was also a member of Plymouth Church in Utica. Doug loved to cook, especially for family and friends at parties or outings. He also enjoyed golfing and in later years, going to the Turning Stone Casino. Doug had traveled all over North America including Hawaii. He would stay at his cottage on Oneida Lake during the summer, and travel to Daytona Beach, Florida during the winter. Doug is survived by his wife, Eleanor Campbell, Utica; two daughters and a son-in-law, Sandra Delia, Frankfort, Donna and Vito Valenzano, Floyd; a son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Pam Campbell, Floyd; six grandchildren and their spouses, David Delia, Frankfort, Mark (& Jessica) Delia, NC, Rick (& Nicole) Campbell, RI, Kimberly (& Chris) Schachtler, Deansboro, Justin (& Keri) Campbell, Rome, Stacey Campbell, Floyd, as well as 8 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Also surviving are 2 stepchildren, Joseph Bouse, New York Mills, and Donna Bouse, Utica. He is predeceased by 3 sisters and 1 brother. Mr. Campbell's funeral services, entrusted to the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Rd., North Utica, will be held privately at the convenience of the family. In keeping with Doug's wishes, there are no calling hours. Those wishing may donate to the Molson Jones VFW Post 7393, New York Mills or to the Abraham House in Doug's memory. In Doug's own words, to his family and friends, "Remember the good times."
