Obituary of Florence Ostrowski
Please share a memory of Florence to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Florence Ostrowski, 100, a resident of the Masonic Care Community, formerly of North Utica, passed away Sunday, February 2. 2014. Florence was born in Utica on September 19, 1913, the daughter of Alexander and Valeria Craska Murawski, who farmed on Luke Rd. in Marcy. As a farm girl, Florence was active in 4-H and was proud of the blue ribbons she won for her vegetables entered in the NYS Fair. After leaving the farm at age 16, she entered the world of work, and after marrying Edward in 1933, and at age 40, obtained her GED diploma and went on to receive her Practical Nursing license in 1956. She assisted the late Dr. Robert Brennan, well known Utica pediatrician, for many years. She and her late husband of 72 years, were devoted parents and loving grandparents and great-grandparents. Florence and Ed loved the out-of-doors and, as avid gardeners, raised a variety of vegetables, fruits, berries and flowers. A family saying was "Put on the kettle, I'm going up to pick the corn." A devout Christian, Florence was an active long time member of St. Peter's Church, serving on many committees. Florence is survived by her three daughters and sons-in-law, Dolores and Daniel Noonan of Oneonta; Loraine Spagnola of Spencerport; Irene and James Fluty of Valrico, FL; six grandchildren and their spouses, Beth Ann and James Cumbo and children, Peter and Elizabeth; Peter and Michelle Spagnola and children, Michael and Samantha; Mary and Michael Marsh and children, Sam and Leo; James and Lisa Fluty and children, Nicholas and Michael; Derek and Amy Fluty and children, Daren and Taylor; and Daniel P. Noonan; sisters, Ella Krauza and Irene Jablonski; sisters-in-law, Eleanor Murawski and Irene Murawski; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Edward; brothers, Leo, Edwin and Ernest; son-in-law, Samuel Spagnola; and grandchildren, Ann Elizabeth and Scott Spagnola. Mrs. Ostrowski's funeral will be held on Saturday, February 15, 2014, with visitation from 9 - 11 a.m. at the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Road, North Utica, followed by an 11:30 Mass of Christian Burial at St. Peter's Church. Interment will follow at Holy Trinity Cemetery. In remembrance of Florence, those wishing may send donations to The Masonic Care Community, c/o Resident Activities, 2150 Bleecker St., Utica NY 13501 or to St. Peter's Church, 422 Coventry Ave., Utica NY 13502. Florence's family thanks the entire staff of The Masonic Care Community, especially the Windham Household, for their care, kindnesses and love shown during the time she made her home there. Any family concern about mom's entering a nursing home three years ago was quickly allayed by this special group of caregivers. A sincere thank you is extended to Dr. Guy Wilcox whose medical skills and compassionate demeanor helped Florence realize her 100th birthday.
