Obituary of Dorothy Dignan Buckley

CLINTON - Dorothy Dignan Buckley, our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend died on Tuesday, January 21, 2014. She was born on August 28, 1921 in Utica, NY, the daughter of Herbert Louis and Emma Augusta (Da Brunz) Dignan. She was a 1939 graduate of St. Francis de Sales High School. She married the love of her life, Edward V. Buckley, on September 10, 1949 at St. Mary's Church in Clinton, NY. They enjoyed sixty-three years of married life. Edward passed away in March of 2013. She worked for the New York Telephone Company, St. Mary's School as its secretary and librarian, and retired from Hamilton College Library. She was a parishioner of St. Mary's Church in Clinton, a member of the St. Mary's Choir, and served on the Parish Council. She and her husband were members of the Christian Family Movement (CFM) for many years. As a huge supporter of her husband's interest in running, she belonged to the Utica Roadrunners and the Syracuse Chargers Track Club. She volunteered at many local road races at the finish line. She belonged to the Helmuth-Ingalls Post 232 Legion Auxiliary. She helped place flags on the graves of veterans in rural cemeteries for many years. Many of these activities she was able to enjoy well into her eighties. Her major focus in life was her family. For many years, she enjoyed being a homemaker and being her children's first teacher. Her faith was a huge part of her life and she shared that gift with her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Dorothy leaves six children and their spouses, Barbara and Patrick Grimes of Clinton, Patrick and Carolyn Buckley of New Hartford, Michael and Andrea Buckley of New Hartford, Eileen and John Noti of Oriskany Falls, Paul and Judy Buckley of Scotia, NY, and Kate and Conrad Pilson of Boston, MA. She also leaves eighteen beloved grandchildren: Stephanie, Todd, Ellen, Chris, Jamie, Jenny, Karen, Kevin, Matt, Andy, Jason, Dan, Robbie, Patrick, J. J., Eric, Mark, and Shane. In addition, she leaves twenty-two cherished great-grandchildren: Maddie, Taryn, Miller, Maya, Clara, Emma, Maggie, Brigid, Seamus, Eoin, Jerome, Santino, Selena, Marcus, Angie, JohnArif, Nadim, Glenn, Leah, Eddie, Brayden, and Bryce. Also surviving her are two sisters: Rita Halfmann and Carol McPherson of Clinton, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and neighbors. Besides her husband and parents, Dorothy was predeceased by a brother, Herbert Dignan, and his wife, Millie, and several in-laws: Frederick Halfmann, Donald McPherson, Evelyn Buckley, Eleanor and Leo Garrett, Elizabeth and Herbert Hullar, Marjorie and Howard Wright, Rose and Robert Greene, and Sarah and Peter Schachtler. Mrs. Buckley's funeral will be held on Friday, January 24, 2014 at 10:00 am at St. Mary's Church, Clinton, where her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will take place in St. Mary's Parish Cemetery, Clinton. Relatives and friends may call at the Heintz Funeral Home, 10 East Park Row, Clinton, Thursday evening, from 4 - 7 pm. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may donate to St. Mary's Church, Clinton, NY in Dorothy's memory. The family would like to express its gratitude to Dorothy's special caregivers Katie, Evie, Brooke, Gloria, Lisa, and Fiki. Special thanks is also due to the caring staff of the Applewood Unit at the Martin Luther Home.
