UTICA - Richard H. Ellis, 86, of Utica, passed away Friday, December 6, 2013 at his home. Richard was born on June 24, 1927, in Utica, the son of Joseph and Mary (Wells) Ellis. At the age of 18, Dick enlisted in the US Army, serving his country during the Korean War. On November 29, 1951, Dick married Audrey (Peggy) Hughes, a union of 62 years. He had worked locally as a painter with local contractors before being employed with the Utica School System, retiring in 1988. Dick is survived by his wife, Audrey Ellis, Utica; four brothers, Donald (& Carolyn "Faye") Ellis, Nevada, Robert Ellis, Oriskany Falls, John (& Cora Decan), Oriskany Falls, and Terrence Ellis, Utica; one sister, Beverly Ellis, Utica, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, James and Gerald Ellis. Funeral services, entrusted to the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Rd., North Utica, are being held privately at the convenience of the family. Interment will take place in St. Agnes Cemetery, Utica. In keeping with Dick's wishes, there are no calling hours. Those wishing may donate to the Stevens-Swan Humane Society, or to Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc. in Dick's memory. The family would like to thank Dick's friends and neighbors, as well as his doctors and Hospice caregivers for the care and compassion shown during this difficult time.
