Obituary of James L. Calhoun

James L. Calhoun, 85, of Frankfort, passed away on Thursday, December 27, 2018, at his home with his loving family by his side. James was born in Utica, NY on October 18, 1933, the son of the late Joseph and Emma Maydole Calhoun. He was a graduate of local schools and was a veteran of the US Air Force. He received his bachelor’s degree at Nazareth College and his Master’s degree in Speech and Language Pathology from the College of St. Rose. James was employed by the Utica City School district and most recently was a speech pathologist at JFK High School, from which he retired on June 30, 1997. James was a parishioner of St. Mark’s Church. Dad was so very proud of his family especially his children and grandchildren. Christmas was his favorite time of year when he enjoyed playing Santa Claus for all the children of the family. He enjoyed throwing parties at his home especially his infamous 4th of July parties where he could spend time with friends and family. His favorite past times included shopping garage and estate sales, reading, playing cards, and spending time at his homes in Florida and North Carolina. He will be deeply missed by family, friends and all who knew and loved him. James is survived by his partner, Nicholas Kydon, Jr. of Frankfort; a daughter, Jennifer Calhoun of Tampa, FL; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Mary Calhoun and Jason and Amanda Calhoun all of Vermont; his grandchildren Muirin and Genevieve Calhoun and Eli Calhoun all of Vermont; his friend and former wife, Joan Calhoun of Utica; one sister, Maryann Derby of Florida; one brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Dorothy Calhoun of Utica; and many special nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his sisters, Jessie Wojcik, Grace Walker, Elizabeth Sharkey and Olive Shook. Mr. Calhoun’s funeral will be held on Monday, December 31, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mark’s Church, 440 Keyes Rd., N. Utica, where his Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated. His interment will be in the spring at Green Lawn Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Calling hours for family and friends are Sunday (today) from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Rd., N. Utica.
