New Hartford - Karen M. Newman, 68, of New Hartford, passed away Sunday, October 6, 2013 at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Karen was born in Utica on November 16, 1944, the daughter of Arthur and Florence (Williams) Reppel. She was raised and educated locally, graduating from Utica Free Academy. On February 4, 1967, Karen married Frank E. Newman at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Utica. For several years, she worked as a hairdresser, retiring to raise her family. After her children were grown, Karen returned to work as a clerk for K-Mart. Twenty three years ago Karen was the recipient of a Liver Transplant that rewarded her and her family with many enjoyable and memorable years. She had several hobbies, including sewing, knitting, crafting, gardening, baking, traveling, and shopping. When living in West Winfield, she had belonged to St. Joseph the Worker Church and also sang in their choir. Upon returning to the area, she rejoined Our Lady of Lourdes Church. Karen was also a member of the New Hartford American Legion Post # 1376, Ladies Auxiliary. Karen is survived by her beloved husband, Frank Newman, New Hartford; two daughters and a son-in-law, Lisa Rush, Utica, Kelly and Michael Jones, New Hartford; two sons and daughters-in-law, Eric and Davina Newman, New Hartford, Kristian and Nichole Newman, Hamilton; her father and stepmother, Arthur and Lorraine Reppel, Canastota; twelve cherished grandchildren, Justin, Tyler, & Ryan Newman; Jimmie, Samantha, Benjamin, & Jonathan Rush, & Ian Benjamin; Austin & Victoria Jones; Emma, & Molly Newman. Also surviving is one sister, Christine Cusworth, New York Mills; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Roger Reppel, Clinton, Stephen and Kerri Reppel, Utica. Besides her mother, Karen was predeceased by a sister and brother-in-law, Joan & John Novak, and a brother, Brian Reppel. Mrs. Newman's funeral will be held on Friday, October 11, 2013 at 10:00 am at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Utica, where her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Whitestown. Relatives and friends may call at the Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica, Thursday evening, from 4 - 7 pm. For those wishing to donate, donations will be excepted and given to The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Karen's memory.
