Mr. Herbert (Herbie) J. Race, 78, of Whitesboro, Passed away on Wednesday July 3, 2013 at Faxton-St. Luke's healthcare in New Hartford. Herbert was born on March 2, 1935 in Utica, the son of Herbert E. and Mary Theresa (Leach) Race. He was raised locally, was a graduate of Sacred Heart grade school and Whitesboro High School. Herbert honorably served his country in the US Army during the Korean War. On July 29, 1961, Herbert Married Mary Ellen Daly at Blessed Sacrament Church in Utica, a loving and devoted union of 51 years until the recent passing of his beloved Mary Ellen on June 5, 2013. Herbert was the owner and operator of Leach Brothers Plumbing and Heating in Yorkville and more recently employed with K-Mart until his retirement. He was a member of Kiwanis International, and a parishioner of St. Paul's Church in Whitesboro. Herbie enjoyed spending time at his camp on 4th Lake in Old Forge, long nature walks with his children around Quiver Pond, spending time at Lock 20 and especially fishing with his grandchildren. In is younger years, he often took his children skiing at McCauley Mountain. Mr. Race is survived by four children, Kevin Race and Cindy Nichols of Whitesboro, Corinne Barcomb and John Wiley of N. Utica, Cheryl Allen and Max Becker of NY Mills and Renee Mitsler and Scott Ouimette of Whitesboro; seven cherished grandchildren, Andrew Mitsler, Shane Race, Shannon Guernsey and her husband Shawn, Jared Race, Jordyn Race, Dylan Allen and Dakota Allen; an adored great grandson, Thomas Guernsey; a sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Joseph Rosinski of Fl; a sister-in-law, Barbara Daly of Clinton and Herbie's "right hand man", Bruce Blum of Whitesboro. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews and his canine companion, Tara. Mr. Race's funeral will be held on Monday July 8, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. at the Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica. Interment will be held at the convenience of his family. Calling hours for family and friends are Monday from 4:00-7:00 p.m. prior to the service.
