Robert C. Oglesby, 91, of Utica, passed away Friday, March 15, 2013 at Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare Center, New Hartford, with his loving family by his side. Robert was born in LaFayette, Georgia on January 31, 1922, the son of George W. and Henrietta (Kemp) Oglesby. He was raised and educated in Georgia and later attended Utica College. From there he went on to serve his country with the US Army. On April 6, 1940, Robert married Mildred J. Brown in Georgia. Mrs. Oglesby passed away in 1989. He had worked for Savage Arms and later for Chicago Pneumatic. For many years, Robert also ran a local amusement ride company with his business partner, Robert Foley. He was a member of the Sauquoit Mason Lodge # 150 and the Whitestown American Legion Post # 1113. Robert was of the Methodist faith. Robert is survived by his brother, Howard Oglesby, Cape Town, South Africa; his son-in-law, Richard F. Abel, Marcy; his grandchildren, John (& Jody) Oglesby, Billings, MT, Lisa Oglesby, Utica, Vicky (& Mike) Hebert, Chicopee, MA, Janet McCarter, OK, Garrett (Suzanne) Garner, Fredericksburg, VA, Richard (& Lisa) Abel, Whitesboro, Steven Abel, Utica, and Mark Abel, Marcy; eleven cherished great grandchildren, Elizabeth Oglesby, Utica, Buck Oglesby and Aria Oglesby, Billings, MT, Austin Abel, Whitesboro, Seth Abel, Rome, Eric Swartz and Justin Swartz, Manassas, VA, Gloria Garner and Tommy Garner, Fredericksburg, VA, Jack Hebert and Justin Hebert, Chicopee, MA. Also surviving are special family members, Teddi and Joe Minuti, New Hartford, as well as many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. Besides his wife, Robert is predeceased by two sons, Irvine Eugene (Gene) Oglesby and Garrett Howard (Bucky) Oglesby; his daughter, Patricia A. Abel; two brothers and three sisters-in-law, Grant and Louise Oglesby, Carl and Margaret Oglesby, and Sylvia Oglesby. Mr. Oglesby's funeral service will be held Monday evening, at 7:00 pm, at the Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica, with Pastor Tim Burns presiding. Interment in Calvary Cemetery, Utica will take place at the convenience of the family. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the funeral home, Monday evening, from 4 - 7 pm, prior to the funeral service. Those wishing may donate to the American Heart Association in Robert's memory.
