CLINTON – John “Jack” A. Lane, 66, of Clinton, passed away peacefully in his sleep, Sunday evening, June 4, 2017 at his home.
Jack was born August 26, 1950, in Utica, the son of Robert M. and Marion (Selbach) Lane. He was raised and educated in Clinton, graduating from Clinton Central High School. He served his country with the US Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, where he received the Purple Heart Medal. Jack was a cobbler by trade, and owned and operated the Clinton Shoe Center. Jack served the Village of Clinton in many ways through the years. He served as trustee for over 38 years; and served as deputy mayor before becoming mayor in 2011 to the present. He was instrumental in the development and beautification of the Village Green, especially its gazebo. He was a proud member and past commander of Schilling, Burns, and Young VFW Post # 9591, Clinton; member and past commander of the New York State VFW’s 4th District; the Helmuth-Ingalls American Legion Post #232, Franklin Springs; member and past officer of the Purple Hearts Society of Utica, where he took part in the building of the Purple Heart Park in West Utica. He also served as the Village of Clinton DPW Commissioner for many years while serving as trustee.
Jack is survived by his son, Geoffrey Lane, Clinton; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Diane Lane, Clinton, Linda and Les Delmata, Poland, NY, Suzanne and Jeff Robinson, Sauquoit; four brothers and three sisters-in-law, David and Barbara Lane, Clark Mills, Steven Lane, Syracuse, Michael and Kim Lane, Florida, Thomas and Kim Lane, Clinton; as well as 25 nieces and nephews and many, many great nieces and great nephews. Also surviving is his wife, Mary Drescher Lane, Herkimer; and his former wife and mother of his son, Debbie Fowler, Munnsville. He is predeceased by two brothers, Robert and Richard Lane.
Jack was a generous man, someone to count on and who would extend his services in a time of need. He’d welcome the opportunity to mentor the younger generation.
Jack’s niece, Jessica Robinson, joined him at the Clinton Shoe Center, five years ago, and is thankful for all he taught her. Jessica was witness to the legacy he created and the service provided to the community for the past 38 years.
Jack’s funeral will be held on Friday, June 9, 2017 at 10:00 am at St. Mary’s Church, Clinton where his Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment with Military Honors will take place in Crown Hill Memorial Park, Kirkland. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Heintz Funeral Home, 10 East Park Row, Clinton, Thursday evening, from 4 – 7 pm.
