Ruth Corrigan Mundschenk, 94, of Utica, passed away Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at the Sitrin Home in New Hartford with her family by her side. Ruth was born in Deer River, NY on August 9, 1918, the daughter of John and Inez (Barker) Corrigan. She was raised and educated in Lowville, and a graduate of Lowville Academy and went on to attend Harlem Valley School of Nursing. In 1938, Ruth married Harley P. Mundschenk in Lowville. Mr. Mundschenk passed away in 1979. Ruth had been employed with Berger's Department Store before spending nearly ten years working at Utica State Hospital. She then became a home caregiver in the Utica area. Ruth had been a member of Sacred Heart Church and their Altar Rosary Society until the church's closing. She then became a member of Church of the Sacred Heart & St. Mary Our Lady of Czestochowa in New York Mills. Ruth had been a member of the Malsan-Jones VFW Post # 7393 Ladies Auxiliary. She was also a Girl Scout Troop Leader and became the District Chairman of the Girl Scout Council. Ruth is survived by two daughters, Patricia I. Mundschenk, Utica, Elizabeth A. Mundschenk and her partner, Annette Lein, Rochester; a son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Joanna Mundschenk, Frederick, MD; a son-in-law, Terry Donaldson, Upper Marlboro, MD. She was "Gaga" to five beloved grandchildren, Renee Walchuck, MD, Marcia Gildar, MD, Amy Hubble, MD, Michelle Gross, MD, and Karen Donaldson, Utica; as well as by 9 cherished great grandchildren, Jacob, Matthew, Rachel, Justin, Ryan, Ethan, Sam, Tommy and Ava . Ruth is predeceased by a daughter, Sandra Donaldson; a sister, Eleanor Stevens; and two brothers, Kenneth and Raymond Corrigan. Ruth was a woman of varied interests. She was a dedicated Boilermaker volunteer at the Yorkville Fire Department water station. She enjoyed baking, swimming, crafts and was an avid berry picker. She loved animals and was a dedicated grammy to her "roomie" Karen's two cats, Zoe and Maisey. While Ruth loved each and every grandchild, it must be noted that a truly unique and beautiful relationship existed between Karen and her grandmother. Having been "roomies" for some twenty years, a mentoring, supportive, and caring bond made the later years for Ruth truly loving and memorable ones beyond measure. The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Kevin McCormick, Dr. Atul Butala and the staff at St. Elizabeth Medical Center. The family is also grateful for the loving care given to Ruth at Sitrin's Hickory House. They would especially like to thank Sara, Anne, Dzena, Katherine, Rifeta, Cindy H. and Sandy. The family would also like to give a special thank you to a group of friends that were especially supportive during Ruth's final months. They include Virginia, Betsy, Bill, Pat, Edna, Anne, Tammy, Mary and Gary.
