Mary J. Bartkowiak, 94, of Utica passed away on Saturday, December 15, 2012. Mary was born in Utica on January 31, 1918 a daughter of Steven and Bertha (Popielarczyk) Potempa. On January 25, 1947 in New York City, Mary was united in marriage to John S. Bartkowiak. He passed away on March 11, 1951. For many years until her retirement in 1981 Mary was employed with Niagara Mohawk Power Corp. She was a parishioner of St. Joseph's and St. Patrick's Church, Utica, and a member of the West Side Seniors, St. Mary's Ladies Aux. of the Knights of St. John, the Altar Rosary Society of the Church, and a past member of the North Utica Seniors. Mary was also an avid bingo player who enjoyed going to the Casino, crocheting, doing crossword puzzles, gardening and in her early years traveling. Mary was a remarkable woman with an infectious smile. She was strong willed and never complained about anything. Most important to Mary was her family which was reflected in her love and dedication to her children and grandchildren. Mary is survived by her five children and spouses, Joyce and Karl Schmidt, Marcy, Jacqueline Smith, New Hartford, Joanne Bartkowiak, New Hartford, Sharon and Frank Nasutovicz, New Hartford and Ronald Potempa, Utica, 6 grandchildren and spouses, Karl and Paula Schmidt, NJ, Pamela and Robert Dulan, Fairport, NY, Mark Smith, New Hartford, Steven Smith, New Hartford, Kristen Smith, Holland Patent, Michael and Tiffany Nasutovicz, VA, 4 great grandchildren, Alec Dulan, Amanda Dulan, Andrew Schmidt, and Evan Schmidt, a brother, Edward Potempa, FL and several nieces and nephews. Mary was predeceased by a grandson, Matthew Nasutovicz in 2001 and 4 brothers and 2 sisters. Mrs. Bartkowiak's funeral will be held on Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at 11:15 from the Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica and at 12:00 from St. Joseph's and St. Patrick's Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are Tuesday from 4-7. Those so wishing may make donations to the Knights of St. John Home or The National Marfan Foundation in Mary's memory.
