Frank H. Gruenewald, 86, of Marcy passed away on Wednesday, June 27, 2012 in Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare with his family by his side. Frank was born on February 10, 1926 in Dumas, Arkansas, the son of Frank J. and Ethlyn (Ebert) Gruenewald. He then moved with his parents and sister to Hope, Arkansas where he lived for nine years. In the early thirties, Frank's family moved to Chicago and then in 1938 the family moved to Utica. Frank graduated from Utica Free Academy in January 1944. He was inducted into the US Navy in June 1944 and served at a Navy repair base in Hollandia, New Guinea. After being discharged in June 1946, Frank enrolled at Utica College in 1949 in now Professor Emeritus Raymond Simon's Public Relations Program. On August 12, 1951 in Clinton, NY, Frank was united in marriage to Dolores Graniero. In 1951 he was recalled in the Navy and served on board the USS Bristol, a destroyer headed for Korea. Upon returning stateside in 1952, Frank returned to Utica College and received a degree in Public Relations in January 1954. Frank began his work career at WKTV in 1953 as Continuity Director and worked in various sales positions at the station until becoming General Manager of Harron Cable Co. in 1966. He worked at Harron Communications and successor Adelphia Communications until "retiring" in 2002. Frank dedicated his life to volunteerism and was involved in a number of organizations including the following: 21 years, 2 as Vice President, 1 as President of the Whitesboro Central School Board; 45 years in the Utica Power Squadron of the United States Power Squadron; 6 years on the United Way's PR Committee, 15 years as Treasurer of Boy Scout Troup # 79 in Marcy; 3 years, 1 as Chairman on the Marcy Planning Board; 25 years as Special Projects Coordinator for the Town of Marcy; 4 years, 1 as President, on the Advisory Committee of the Oneida County Department of Social Services; 5 year member of the Oneida County Board of Ethics, 6 years on the Private Industry Council Board; 8 years, 1 year as President on the Faxton Hospital Foundation Board; 1 year on the merged Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare Foundation Board; 7 years, 1 as President, on the Oneida County Visitors and Convention Bureau Board; 10 years, 1 as President of the Marcy Chamber of Commerce; 13 years as President of Christmas on Main Street; 3 years on the Erie Canal School Boat Foundation, 53 years, 1 as President of the Oriskany-Whitesboro Rotary Club; 11 years and Charter Member of the Greater Utica Sports Hall of Fame; 15 years as member of the Tin Can Sailors, 8 years on the Red Cross Membership Advisory Board; 12 years Chairman of the Senior Center's Movie of the Afternoon Program, 25 years as Executive Director of the "Betsy the Barge" Concert Series; and lifetime member of Utica Free Academy Alumni Association. For over 50 years Frank was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Utica. Frank was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Oneida Lake Association, the Sebring, Florida Rotary, the Mohawk Valley Advertising Club and a Greeter at the Sebring Road Race for 18 years. Frank was a recipient of the Paul Harris Award and in 2010 received the College Service Award from the Utica College Alumni Association. Frank is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Dolores, three children, Kurt and Kim Gruenewald, Marcy, David Gruenewald, Manlius, NY and Lisa and John Bronk, Marcy, six grandchildren, Kyle Gruenewald, Kourtney Coons and her husband Jack, Jon David and Thomas Gruenewald and Katherine and Gregory Bronk, a sister Deborah Strong, Utica, and two nephews Sar-Shalom Strong and Shem Guibbory. Frank was predeceased by a daughter-in-law, Marcia Gruenewald. A funeral service for Mr. Gruenewald will be held on Saturday, June 30, 2012 at 8:00 PM at the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Rd. N. Utica. Calling hours for Mr. Gruenewald will be held on Saturday from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8. A private burial with Military Honors will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Utica College Annual Fund or the Lock 20 Betsy Pavilion Fund, c/o Everett Smith, 6956 Irish Rd., Marcy, NY 13403. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the nurses and doctors at St. Luke's and a special thank you to Judy in the CCU at St. Luke's.
