Obituary of Paul Charles Smith

Paul C. Smith, 70, of New Hartford, passed away Thursday, April 12, 2012, at his home after a long illness. Paul was born in Bridgewater, NY on October 26, 1941, the son of Edward and Isabella (Wayman) Smith. He was raised and educated in Utica and went on to serve his country with the US Army. On August 16, 1986, Paul married Margaret Rook in Marcy. He was a glazier and had worked for several area glass companies through the years. Paul was a member of Our Lady of the Rosary Church in New Hartford. He enjoyed doing his Sudoku puzzles and his word jumbles. Paul's youngest grandchild, baby Garrett, always had a smile for his "Pa", lifting his spirits even when he wasn't feeling well. He also looked forward to and enjoyed his weekly visits from his brother, Harry. Paul is survived by his beloved wife, Margaret Smith, New Hartford; two daughters, Randi and Frank Matthews, Fairfield, Barbara Smith and companion, Shane Korniat, Little Falls; two sons, Edward and Melanie Smith, Utah, Ken and Kathy Smith, Herkimer; a stepdaughter, Amy Weaver and companion, Lance Jansen, New Hartford; three stepsons, Joseph LaSalle, New Hartford, Thomas and Sandra LaSalle, Poland, Brett LaSalle, Marcy and Allison LaSalle, Oriskany. Also surviving are nineteen beloved grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Harry and Selma Smith, V. Marie Smith, Mary Ann and Luperio Gonzalez, Marguerite Hart, Cathy Caldwell and companion, Christopher Doris, Laura Johnson; two sisters-in-law, Shirley and Harold Knapp, Mary Talerico; two brothers-in-law, Jim and Yvonne Rook, Elmer and Barbara Rook as well as by many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is predeceased by two brothers, William and Richard Smith; a sister, Isabelle Major; his mother and father-in-law, Mary and Elmer Rook; a brother in -law, Carmen Talerico. A Memorial Mass will be held on Thursday, April 19, 2012 at 10:00 am at Our Lady of the Rosary Church in New Hartford. Interment will take place privately at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. Arrangements are entrusted to the Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may donate to the American Cancer Society in Paul's memory. The family would like to thank Dr. Petrie and his nurses and staff in Waterville for the care and compassion shown to Paul and his family during this difficult time.
