Cynthia Marie Stepanowicz, 59, of Schuyler, passed away Friday, November 18, 2011 at her home after a long illness. Cindy was born in Utica on August 17, 1952, the daughter of John and Eileen (Baird) Douglas. She was raised locally and was a graduate of West Canada Valley Central School and Utica School of Commerce. On February 28, 1976, Cindy married Benjamin M. Smither, Jr.. Mr. Smither passed away in 1982. On February 18. 1984, Cindy married Lawrence Stepanowicz. She was employed by St. Luke's Hospital. Cindy was a member of St. Mark's Church in North Utica. Cindy is survived by her husband, Lawrence Stepanowicz, Schuyler; a daughter and son-in-law, Monica Rose and Captain Michael Sharma, Watertown; a son and daughter-in-law, Eric and Sara Smither, NC; five cherished grandchildren, Theresa, Benjamin, Emma, Katherine, and Samuel; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Teresa and Lawrence Bierman, New York Mills and Christina Maziarz, Deerfield; a brother and sister-in-law, John and Priscilla Douglas, DE; her mother-in-law, Gladys Stepanowicz, Marcy; two sisters-in-law, Donna Douglas, DE and Terry Murphy, FL and a brother-in-law, Tom Stepanowicz, Marcy. Cindy also leaves, two aunts, Theresa Douglas (Sr. Mary Jude, O.P.), Buffalo, and Jeanne Pflanz, FL; her Godchild, Greg Maziarz and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She is predeceased by her parents and a brother, Gerald Douglas. Mrs. Stepanowicz's funeral will be held Tuesday, November 22, 2011 at 9:15 am from the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Road, North Utica, and at 10:00 am at St. Mark's Church, North Utica where her Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated. Interment will take place in St. John's Cemetery, Newport. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home, Monday evening, from 6 - 8 pm. Those wishing to make a donation in Cynthia's memory, Please consider Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Cynthia's family feels an enormous debt of gratitude to Hospice and Palliative Care Inc. for the care and compassion shown to Cindy and her family and thanks to Rev. Mark Pasik for his spiritual support.
