Obituary of Betty Jean Maxam

Clinton – Betty Jean (Bush) Maxam, 86, a recent resident of the Presbyterian Home for CNY, New Hartford, and a lifelong resident of Clinton, passed away Sunday, April 23, 2017 at the nursing home.
Betty was born on February 14, 1931 in Utica, NY, the daughter of William and Helen (Nester) Bush. She was raised and educated in Clinton, graduating from Clinton Central High School, Class of 1949. On September 1, 1951, Betty married Arthur “Bob” Maxam in St. Mary’s Church, Clinton. Mr. Maxam passed away in 2006. She had worked in the cafeteria at Clinton Central School, retiring in 1993. Betty was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Clinton, and of the Clinton Historical Society. She especially enjoyed time spent with her family.
Betty is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Richard Santa Maria, Clinton; three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Donna Maxam, Clinton, Richard and Susan Maxam, Clinton, Daniel and Donna Maxam, Clinton; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Danielle (& Adam) Westerfeld, Ashley Maxam, Erin Maxam, Melissa (& Jason) During, Michael (& Andrea) Santa Maria, Rick (& Erica) Maxam, Brandon (& Jill) Maxam, Jamie, Coby, and Tosca Maxam (& spouses); as well as many great grandchildren, including two special great grandchildren, Tyler Wilczek and Everleigh During. Also surviving are a sister and brother-in-law, Alma and Dennis Brady, Clinton, a brother-in-law, Jerry Ritzel, Clark Mills, and a daughter-in-law, Gretchen Maxam, Clinton; and sisters-in-law of her husband’s family, Peg Murfit, Gretchen Maxam, Jeanette DeLuca, Jean Maxam, Cindy Maxam, as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Besides her husband, Betty was predeceased by two sons, Thomas Maxam in 1983, and Timothy Maxam in 2014, and a sister, Helen Ritzel.
Mrs. Maxam’s funeral will be held on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at 9:30 am at St. Mary’s Church where her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment, in St. Mary’s Cemetery, will take place privately at the convenience of the family. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Heintz Funeral Home, 10 East Park Row, Clinton, Wednesday evening, from 4 – 7 pm.
Those wishing may donate to The American Cancer Society, to Central Oneida County Volunteer Ambulance Corps., or to the Clinton Volunteer Fire Dept. in Betty’s memory.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of the Presbyterian Home of CNY for the care and compassion shown to Betty during her stay.
