Richard J. Metzler III, 57, of Remsen, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, August 19, 2011 at Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare Center. Rick was born in Utica on June 9, 1954, the son of Richard J., Jr. and Clara Mae (Humphrey) Metzler. He was raised and educated in New York Mills, graduating from New York Mills High School. On July 26, 1980, Rick married Linda Schaaf at Sacred Heart Church in Utica. He was president of Metzler Printing Company, Inc. in Utica. Rick belonged to the Utica Maennerchor, the Deerfield Fish and Game Club, Uncle's Golf League, CWA Local #14164, and was an honorary member of the New York Mills Fire Department. Rick is survived by his beloved wife, Linda Metzler, Remsen; his three cherished daughters and their spouses, Allison and David Vore, Rochester, Erin Metzler and her companion, Donald Amarose, Remsen, Nicole and Nicholas Gudyka, New York Mills; his mother, Clara Mae and John Durant, Deerfield; a sister, Geri Metzler, Clark Mills; a sister-in-law, Dory Metzler, New Hartford; a brother and sister-in-law, John and Rose Marie Durant, Loudonville; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Douglas and Pauline Schaaf, Whitesboro; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Karen and Robert Pettigrew, New York Mills; and a brother-in-law, Thomas Schaaf, Utica. Also surviving are several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. He is predeceased by his father, Richard Metzler, Jr., and by his brother, Steven Metzler, Sr. Mr. Metzler's funeral will be held Tuesday, August 23, 2011 at 9:15 am from the Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica, and at 10:00 am at Historic Old St. John's Church, Utica where his Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will follow in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Whitesboro. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the funeral home, Monday evening, from 4 - 7 pm. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may donate to the American Heart Association in Rick's memory.
