Obituary of David W. Dunbar

David W. Dunbar, Sr., 77, of North Utica, was given an invitation from the Lord to return to his heavenly home on Tuesday, August 15, 2011, with his wife, sons, daughters and grandchildren at his side as he left on his journey. David was born in Utica, the son of William and Helen Dunbar. He was raised and educated locally and in 1952 joined the US Army, serving during the Korean War. David was united in marriage with Jane (Jeannette) Handzel at St. Stanislaus Church in 1955, sharing a union of 56 years. Being a baker from the age of 16, David fulfilled his dream by becoming the owner of Vogel's Bakery. David is survived by his beloved wife, Jane, Utica; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Darlene and Steve Albigese, New Hartford, Debby Appler, Utica, Laura and Richard Miller, Whitesboro; three sons and a daughter-in-law, David W. Dunbar, Jr., Utica, Gilbert and Kathy Dunbar, Marcy, Gary Dunbar, Sr., Utica; his cherished grandchildren, Andrea, Darlene, Marie, Joey, Ashley, Kaitlin, Alyssa, Samantha, Melissa, Jenny, Gary Jr., Nicole, Mike, Matt and Britney; two great grandchildren, Adrianna and Aubree; one Goddaughter, Elaine Giegle; and cousins, George Dunbar and Barbara Somerville. He is predeceased by two brothers, John and Gilbert Dunbar. Mr. Dunbar's funeral will be held Friday, August 19, 2011 at 10:15 am from the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Rd., N. Utica and 11:00 am in St. Peter's Church, Utica where his Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment in St. Stanislaus Cemetery will take place at the convenience of the family. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home, Thursday evening, from 5 - 7 pm. In keeping with David's wishes, please omit floral offerings. The family offers their heartfelt thanks to the team of doctors (especially his favorites), who treated David with much care, giving him every chance possible. Also thanks to the 5th floor team of nurses, aides, and respiratory therapists, who went out of their way, not only for David, but for his family as well. You know who you are. God Bless and don't lose the compassion you have. We can never express the closeness we felt to God and our family as Fr. David of St. Peter's Church prayed with us.
