Please share a memory of Nellie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Mrs. Nellie L. Youmans was carried in the arms of angels to Heaven on Saturday, June 18, 2011. Nellie was a resident of the St. Luke's Home-Barton North since 2005. She was born Nellie Lloyd Lewis, on May 13, 1929, the second of five children of Welsh immigrants, David and Jane Lewis. Nellie lived with her parents, brother and three sisters, first in Yorkville, then in New York Mills, attending local schools. She was a graduate of Whitesboro High School, class of 1946 and a 1947 graduate of Excelsior School of Business. After graduating from high school she worked at Winship Luggage Company in Utica. On June 23, 1956, she married David B. Youmans, of Sherburne, NY; a union of nearly 51 years until his death in March 2007. Nellie and David lived in N. Utica and have two children; Bruce Youmans and Susan Caldwell. Nellie loved and cherished her family, enjoying many activities with them including family gatherings at her mother's or brother's homes in New York Mills, traveling with family in the Northeast, camping, boating, and swimming in the Adirondacks. Many summer vacations were spent visiting the family camp on North Lake, a rental cabin on Otsego Lake in Cooperstown or in their camper at various state parks. Nellie also enjoyed spending time with her many friends. She was talented in drawing, painting and ceramics and valued the friendships she made when pursuing these interests. Nellie was a good listener, had a delightful sense of humor and a very engaging smile. The kindness she exchanged and the friendships she shared with many people over the years was both remarkable and memorable. Nellie was an active member of the former Yorkville Presbyterian Church since childhood, being married there and eventually serving with her husband David as Sunday School teachers, elder and treasurer. She also worked at many of this church's fundraising events and made many friends over her 70 years as a member. More recently she was a member of the Whitesboro Presbyterian Church. She was also a forty year member of the Knit One Talk 3 Club and at one time a member of the Schuyler Senior Citizens. Nellie leaves her son Bruce Youmans, wife Pamela and granddaughter Melissa of Brookfield, NY; daughter Susan Caldwell, husband Mark and grandchildren, John and Cassandra of Frankfort, NY; her sister, Katherine Lewis of NY Mills and many nieces, nephews and their children whom she loved and enjoyed seeing at many family gatherings Nellie also leaves long time friends, Phyllis and Ron Draper and their sons, Ron Draper and Jennifer and sons and Kent Draper. She was predeceased by her parents, brother Thomas Lewis of NY Mills and sisters, Elizabeth Haskins of Virgil, NY and Jane Normand of Rome. Nellie's family would like to express their deep appreciation for the dedication and kindness of the nurses and care-givers at the St. Luke's Home-Barton North. The staff at Barton North was her second family and she greatly enjoyed their company, getting to know many of them personally. Nellie's children also thank their aunt Kath, Nellie's sister, who took Nellie on many daytime outings from St, Luke's Home for shopping, lunch and visiting. Mrs. Youmans' funeral will be held on Tuesday June 21, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. at the Heintz Funeral Home 408 Herkimer Rd., N. Utica.
