Edward W. Luley, 97, of the Presbyterian Home passed away Monday May 30, 2011 at the home. Edward was born in Utica on July 29, 1913 the son of Edward C. and Loretto A. (Scholl) Luley. At St. Joseph's Church, Utica on July 6, 1936 he married Catherine A. Schreck a blessed union of 57 years until her death in 1993. Edward proudly served in the Army during World War II and served in the European Theatre. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart. In his early years Edward was an usher at the Utica Theatre. In 1948 Edward joined the Utica Police Department and served for 27 years attaining the rank of Captain and retired in 1975. He was proud of the fact that he walked the beat from the Busy Corner to Oneida Square. He was a member of St. Joseph's & St. Patrick's Church, Utica, Knights of Columbus Council #189, Police and Fire Retirees, American Legion Phelan Post and DAV. Edward is survived by his brother, Harold Luley, Utica, 5 grandchildren, Anne Zielinski, Utica, Denise Zielinski, Clinton, Cheryl Tromley, FL, Edmund Zielinski, VT and Joseph Zielinski, Jr., Utica, 5 great grandchildren , a great great granddaughter, Madison Marie Wollaber, a special goddaughter Barbara Jakubowski, Utica and many nieces and nephews. Edward was predeceased by his daughter, Marie Ann Zielinski in 1976, a brother, Clarence Luley and a sister, Loretto Luley. Mr. Luley's funeral with military honors will be held on Friday June 3, 2011 at 10:15 from the Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica and at 11:00 from St. Joseph's & St. Patrick's Church, Utica. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Whitesboro. Calling hours at the funeral home are Thursday from 4-7. The Knights of Columbus will meet at the funeral home Thursday evening at 6:30. The family would like to thank the staffs of the Critical Care Unit of Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare and Maple Unit of the Presbyterian Home for all the wonderful care given to Edward.
