Obituary of Harold B. Hanes

New Hartford / Clinton – Harold B. Hanes, 97, a resident of the Presbyterian Home for CNY, passed away Monday, April 10, 2017 at Faxton - St. Luke’s Healthcare Center, New Hartford.
Harold was born December 29, 1919, in Johnstown, NY, the son of Arthur David and Isabella Caukins (Sutliff) Hanes. He was raised and educated in Johnstown, graduating from Johnstown High School. Harold went on to serve his country with the US Army during World War II. On April 27, 1946, Harold married Muriel Olive Brown, in Gloversville, NY, sharing a union of nearly 71 years. He was employed with AT&T and New York Telephone in Utica, for 43 years, retiring in 1982. Harold was a member of the New Hartford United Methodist Church, of the New Hartford American Legion, of the Telephone Pioneers, a Lifeline member, a Junior Achiever, a Boy Scout ‘Scout Master’ for Troop 88 of which he received the ‘Silver Beaver Award’. Harold was an artist in many ways; he enjoyed woodworking and painting, including rock painting where he had painted over 300 rocks for runners of the Boilermaker. During his time at the Presbyterian Home, he became well-known as the ‘resident artist’ and greatly enjoyed sharing his art with those around him.
Harold is survived by his beloved wife, Muriel Hanes, New Hartford; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Charlene Thompson, Florida, LeeAnn and Gary Brockett, Clinton, Suzanne and Scott Meisel, Tennessee; a son and daughter-in-law, James and Claire Hanes, North Carolina. Also surviving are sixteen grandchildren, twenty-four great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren. Harold is predeceased by a son David, and by two sisters, Jennette Hanes, and Anna Beebe.
Mr. Hanes’ funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 15, 2017 at 1 pm at the Heintz Funeral Home, 10 East Park Row, Clinton, with Pastor Brad Cheseboro presiding. Interment will follow in Crown Hill Memorial Park, Clinton. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 11 am – 1 pm, prior to the service.
