Gerald A. (Jerry) Bushey, 76, of Utica passed away on Monday March 7, 2011 after a yearlong battle with cancer with his loving family by his side. Jerry was born in Plattsburgh, NY on September 13, 1934 the son of Fraser and Ruby (Pratt) Bushey. On July 31, 1954 at St. Joseph's Church in Mooers, NY Jerry married Irene J. Gonyo a blessed union of 55 years until her passing away on November 20, 2009. Jerry and Irene moved to the Utica area in 1965. From 1965 to 1973 they ran Latham Trailer Sales on Rt. 5 in Schuyler. In 1973 they established G&I Homes, Inc., which grew from one location to its current five locations. They ran the business until their retirement in 1998. At that time they sold their business to eight of their children. In 2006 Jerry and Irene were inducted into the New York Housing Hall of Fame. Jerry was a parishioner of St. Peter's Church, N. Utica. Jerry had many interests especially his love of collecting antiques. Most important Jerry will be remembered for his devotion to his wife. He was a loving father to his thirteen children and cherished his forty grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Special times shared with family were a treasure such as Christmas Eve, Fourth of July picnics at the lake and Jerry and Irene's 50th Wedding Anniversary family cruise. Jerry and Irene were avid travelers, visiting South Africa, New Zealand and Singapore. They also enjoyed spending winters in Florida and summers at their home on Caroga Lake. Jerry is survived by his children and their spouses: Patricia (Lawson) Fowble, of Worcester, NY, Paul Bushey, Ilion, Peter (Lori) Bushey, Robert (Kate) Bushey, David (Laurie) Bushey, Joseph (Doreen) Bushey, all of Utica, Daniel (Rosalie) Bushey, of New Hartford, James (Jackie) Bushey, of Marcy, Ruby (Jim) Beach and Jerry (Kelly) Bushey, of Schuyler, Matthew (Melissa) Bushey, of New Hartford, Irene (Jamie) Fazio, of Rochester, and Mary (Joseph) Scalise, of Schuyler. He is also survived by his brother, Clarence (Esther) Bushey, of Plattsburgh, and his two sisters, Leda Bushey, of Ilion and Catherine (Charles) Thorne, of Manheim, PA. He also leaves his in-laws, Patricia (Stan) Wood, of Plattsburgh, Gerald (Shirley) Gonyo, Harry (Bonnie) Gonyo, and Evelyn Gonyo, of Mooers, NY. Jerry also leaves his grandchildren: Alyssa, Lawson (Beth), and Renee Fowble, Crystal (Eric) Mata, Paula (John) Enlow, Michelle and Pamela Bushey, Michael (Jennifer), Megan and Keegan Bushey (fiancé Teresa Kaczoroski), Andrew and Cassandra Bushey, Melissa (Michael) Perkins, Amanda, Sarah, Kristina and Luke Bushey, Jessica, Joseph and Emily Bushey, Amber Wilson, Andrew and Joshua Bushey, James, Taylor and Ryan Bushey, Kyle and Patrick Beach, Gianna, Noah, Hannah and Moriah Bushey, Matthew Bushey, Katie and Jenna Fazio, Isabella, Jacob and Brianna Scalise. Gerald was blessed to have eight great grandchildren, Kayla Snyder, Alexander Enlow, Julianna Bushey, Mia Bella Mata, Jaina and Gwynn Fowble, Jamarhy Bushey and Nicholas Bushey and close friends, Valerie and Curt Mitchell, FL. Gerald also leaves many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, Gerald was predeceased by his two granddaughters, Nicole and Kirsten Bushey, his parents, Fraser and Ruby Bushey, his sister, Gladys Bushey, his sister-in-law, Margaret Monette, his brothers-in-law, Charles, Earl and Arnold Gonyo, his in-laws, Peter and Dorothy Gonyo and his canine companion, Sheba. Mr. Bushey's funeral will be held on Friday, March 11, 2011 at 11:00 from St. Peter's Church, North Utica. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Utica. Calling hours for Mr. Bushey will be held on Thursday from 4 - 8 at the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Rd., North Utica. Those so wishing may make donations to Hope House, Notre Dame High School or the American Cancer Society. Envelopes will be provided at the funeral home. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Ann Marie Walrath and Valerie and Curt Mitchell for all the time they assisted in Jerry's care during his illness.
