Mr. Gordon N. Henderson, 78, of Deerfield, passed away on Friday, March 31, 2017 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica. Gordon was born in Utica on February 7, 1939 the son of William N. and Delia (Hand) Henderson. He was raised and educated in Utica and was a graduate of Utica Free Academy. Gordon honorably served his country in the United States Marine corps from 1957-1960. For 39 years, Gordon and Sharon enjoyed a loving marriage until Sharon’s death in 2014. For many years, Gordon was employed as a carpenter with the Local Carpenter’s Union until his retirement. He was a member of the Marine Corps League, Marine Corps Association, Carpenter’s Union, VFW post 8728 in Schuyler, and the American Legion. Gordon enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating, and camping, but his greatest joy came from spending time with friends and family during the holidays and family gatherings. Gordon will be fondly remembered by many as their hero. Mr. Henderson is survived by two daughters, Nancy Zoeckler of Utica and Sherry Diefenbacher of Sauquoit; four sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Lisa Henderson of NY Mills, James and Michelle Henderson of Clinton, John and Zandra Henderson of Knightdale, NC and Chad and Madel Hoffman of CA; an adored aunt, Anna Richards and her family; uncle, George Dunbar and his family as well as several grandchildren and great grandchildren who loving called him “poppy” and nieces, nephews and cherished friends. Also surviving is Lynne R. Kitchin of Sauquoit and Gordon’s canine companion Bahama Mama. He was predeceased by a son, James Kehrli, brother, William T. Henderson and son-in-law, Darren Zoeckler. Mr. Henderson’s funeral will be held on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Rd., N. Utica. Interment, with military honors, will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Utica. Calling hours for family and friends are Tuesday from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Those wishing to make a donation in Gordon’s memory, please consider VFW Post 8728, 240 Wood Lane, Utica, NY 13502. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Mr. Henderson’s family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses and staff at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, ICU and SCU for wonderful care and compassion you provided to Gordon (affectionately known as “The Flash”). A special thank you to Dr. El-Khoury as well as the faculty and staff of St. Elizabeth College of Nursing for the care you provided.
