Mr. Edward J. Murphy, 89, a resident of N. Utica passed away Sunday August 29, 2010. Edward was born in Utica on March 11, 1921 the son of Martin and Ruth (Hoffman) Murphy and received his education in Utica schools. He Proudly served in the US Army Air Corps during WW II and was a member of a crew that flew over 30 missions in Europe for which he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. On May 20, 1950, Edward married Pia L. Widmann in Utica. At one time, Edward was employed with Bendix Corporation in Utica and more recently with the NY State Department of Transportation as a buoy tender in the Canal System retiring in the early 80's. Edward was a member of American Legion Utica Post 229, N. Utica and was a parishioner of St. Peter's Church, N. Utica. Mr. Murphy is survived by his beloved wife Pia; a son and daughter-in-law, Terrence and Mary Lynn Murphy of Syracuse and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three sisters, Ruth Riley, Mary Joswick and Jean O'Donnell and two brothers, John Murphy and Earl Murphy. Mr. Murphy's funeral will be held on Thursday, September 2, 2010 at 9:30 a.m. at the Heintz Funeral Home 408 Herkimer Rd., N. Utica and 10:00 at St. Peter's Church where his mass of Christian burial will be celebrated. Interment with military honors will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Whitesboro. Calling hours for family and friends are Wednesday from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Mr. Murphy's family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff's of Van Duyn Home and Hospital in Syracuse and Acacia Home Care Agency for the wonderful care and compassion that was given to Edward.
