Michael V. (Poppy) Catera, Sr., 82, of Frankfort passed away on Thursday, July 29, 2010 in Faxton-St. Luke's Hospital with his loving family by his side. Michael was born in Utica on October 28, 1927 the son of Joseph and Cosimina (Marco) Catera. Michael proudly served his country in both the U.S. Army and the U. S. Air Force. At St. Agnes Church, Utica on September 28, 1957 Michael was united in marriage to Shirley Castelli. For many years until his retirement he was employed with Laborers Union Local #35. He was a parishioner of St. Anthony's - St. Agnes Church, Utica. Michael was an avid Yankees fan. He especially loved the outdoors and the many vacation spots that he visited. Most important in Michael's life was his family cherishing the times he spent with his grandchildren. The holidays brought much joy to Michael, since they were spent with the ones he loved. Michael is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Shirley, three daughters and sons-in-law, Michelle and Jeff Allen, Utica, Kathy and Pete Belyea, Chittenango, NY, and Jackie and Jerry Raspante, Utica, two sons and a daughter-in-law, Joseph Catera, Frankfort and Mike and Gina Catera, Deerfield, seven beloved grandchildren, Jason Belyea, Karina Belyea, Amanda Mondrick, Douglas Mondrick, Christine Raspante, Christopher Raspante, and Michael Catera, a sister and brother-in-law, Pauline and Robert Grande, Utica, two brothers and sisters-in-law, Joseph and Marilyn Catera, Utica and John and Josephine Catera, Utica, two sisters-in-laws and brothers-in-law, Sandra and Pat Corridori, Sylvan Beach and Karen and George Mender, Utica and many nieces and nephews. Michael was predeceased by a brother, Santo Catera. Mr. Catera's funeral will be held on Monday, August 2, 2010 at 9:15 from the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Rd., N. Utica and at 10:00 from St. Anthony's-St. Agnes Church, Utica. Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery, Utica. Calling hours at the funeral home are Sunday from 4-8. Those so wishing may make donations to the American Heart Association in Michael's memory.
