Mr. Frederick, "Freddy" Ferris, 85, a resident of the Presbyterian Home for CNY, New Hartford, formerly of North Utica, passed away Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at the nursing home. Freddy was born in Utica on February 21, 1925, the son of Roger and Josephine Ferris and was educated in Utica schools. He honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII and participated in the invasion of Normandy, (D day + 2). Freddy was employed by the city of Utica for many years until his retirement. He was a well-known runner, among the first to take part in the "Development Runs" on the Parkway in Utica and had his own running group, the "Ferris Flyers." Freddy was also a boxer, who fought under the name, "Utica Kid." Freddy loved his Lebanese food and was a regular fixture at Karam's whose owners and staff always treated him with kindness. Mr. Ferris is survived by one sister, Gloria Sakran, of Naples, Fl; two brothers, Anthony Ferris, of New Hartford and Joseph Ferris, of Utica; a daughter Cynthia, several grandchildren and a great grandchild. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews, in particular Joleen, Joe, Brooke, Lisa and David, who were privileged to become close to Freddy in the final years of his life, bringing him his favorite Lebanese food and visiting him in the home. Freddy was predeceased by a sister, Helen Abounader, and two brothers, Moses Abounader and Roger Ferris, Jr. Mr. Ferris' funeral will be held on Friday, June 11, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. at Historic Old St. John's Church in Utica where his mass of Christian burial will be celebrated. Interment in Calvary Cemetery, Utica will be held at the convenience of the family. The family will receive visitors at the conclusion of the funeral mass.
