Donald S. Youlen, 78, of Deerfield passed away on Monday, May 31, 2010. Donald was born in Utica on July 26, 1931 the son of Stuart and Ruth (Wurz) Youlen. He was raised and educated in Utica and was a 1949 graduate of Utica Catholic Academy. On April 21, 1951 Donald married Joan Leonard; Joan passed away on September 17, 1976. On November 4, 1978 he married Virginia Milewski; she passed away on May 24, 2001. For 32 years until his retirement Donald was employed with New York Telephone. He served as the Town of Deerfield Supervisor form 1972-1993 he also served as Chairman of the Town of Deerfield Assessors, President of the Association of Towns in Oneida County and the Government Education Program Advisory Committee. Donald was a lifelong member of St. Peter's Church, North Utica, a member of the Izaak Walton League, Lions Club of Deerfield, American Diabetes Association, Central New York Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired, Yukon Hunting Club, General Daniel Butterfield Civil War Roundtable, 40-50 Cornhill Reunions, Utica Meannerchor and the Customer Advisory Council for the U.S. Postal Service. Donald also had fond memories of being the Scoutmaster for Boy Scouts of America Troop #59 and the North Utica Boys Club Baseball League. Donald is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, David J. and Constance Youlen, Fayetteville, NY and James S. and Teresa Youlen, Liverpool, NY, Stepchildren, Jan and Michael Abraham, Utica Joseph and Deborah Hamacher, Deerfield, 9 grandchildren and spouses, David M. and Kate Youlen, Burlington, VT, Kyle J. and Colette Youlen, Mechanicsville, NY, Sarah E. and Jeff Matthews, Lake Placid, NY, Michael S. Youlen, Manassas, VA, Courtney M. Youlen, Liverpool, NY, Anastasia Abraham, Utica, April Willet, Utica, Julie Hamacher, Utica and Kelsey Hamacher, Utica, two great grandchildren, Eva Youlen and Carsten Matthews and two more that will be born this year, a sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth (Betty) and Leo Kelly, Glen Falls, NY and his special friend, Beverly Davis , Doldgeville, NY Mr. Youlen's funeral will be held on Friday, June 4, 2010 at 8:45 from the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Rd., North Utica and at 9:30 from St. Peter's Church, North Utica. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are Thursday from 4-8. Those so wishing may make donations to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association in Don's memory. The family would like to thank the staff of Elderwood at Birchwood Health Care Center, Liverpool, NY and to Dr's Jonathan Wright and Charles Lutz of University Hospital, Syracuse, NY for the wonderful care they gave to Don.
