James R. Delaney, 77 , passed away Tuesday, May 18, 2010. James was born in Utica on November 24, 1932 the son of Ambrose and Frances (Meyers) Delaney. He received his education in the Utica School System. James served in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955 and was stationed in Chelveston, England. On September 1, 1962 James was united in marriage to Carol Massago a blessed union of 35 years until her passing away on April 13, 1997. For many years he was employed at Griffiss Air Force Base as a firefighter and then for ten years was employed as a security guard at the Rite Aid warehouse in Rome. James was a member of the American Legion Leon R. Roberts Post # 161, Holland Patent. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and always enjoyed taking trips to Alaska to visit his son Kevin and his family. Mr. Delaney is survived by two daughters and son-in-law, Dawn and Joel Scherer, Whitesboro and Kimberly Delaney and special friend Art Hamel, Barneveld, one son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Sidney Delaney, Wasilla, Alaska, five grandchildren, Devin and Caryne Delaney, Sean, Colleen and Kyleigh Delaney and a step grandson, Cole Knight, one sister Joan Sharpe, New Hartford, and one brother and sister-in-law, John and Janet Shoen, Whitesboro, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, James (Jelly) Delaney Jr. and two sisters, Cecelia Joseph and Frances Pape Mr. Delaney's funeral will be held on Monday May 24, 2010 at 1:00 pm at the Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica, NY. Calling hours at the funeral home are Sunday from 4-7. Those so wishing may make donations to the Barneveld Volunteer Fire Dept. or the Prospect Ambulance Service in Mr. Delaney's memory.
