William J. Mahanna, of Old Poland Rd., Barneveld, passed away at his home Wednesday, July 15, 2009. In Utica, NY, Bill was born the son of Frank W. and Gertrude R. Platler Mahanna. He was raised and educated in Utica and was a 1945 graduate of St. Francis de Sales High School. He was a graduate of the Albany College of Pharmacy in 1955. He was also an Army veteran, having served from 1945-1946. At Sacred Heart Church, Utica, on October 19, 1957, Bill was married to Maryann (Molly) Crane. For a number of years, Bill was a self-employed pharmacist in Utica and later was the owner of the Mapledale Pharmacy. After its sale, he stayed in the retail pharmacy business until his retirement in 2008. With his wife, Molly, they were also the owners and operators of the Sugarbush Bed and Breakfast since 1991. Bill was a member of St. Leo's-St. Ann's Church, Holland Patent, a member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus and a member of PSCNY (Pharmaceutical Society). Bill dearly loved his wife, children and grandchildren. He loved being in his home creating everlasting family memories. Bill is survived by his wife, Molly; five daughters, M. Christine M. Johnson and her husband, Alan, of Baldwinsville, NY, M. Ann Olin and her husband, Gregg, of Fairport, NY, M. Jane Brady and her husband, David, of Whitesboro, NY, M. Kate Livingston and her husband, Paul, of Lake George, NY, and M. Ellen Mahanna and her partner, Robin Slawson, of Barneveld, NY; four sons, William (Bill) J. Mahanna, II, of Barneveld, NY, Justin J. and his wife, Tricia Mahanna, of Barneveld, NY, Paul J. Mahanna and his partner, Alejandro Rasteletti, of Washington, D.C., and Matthew J. Mahanna and his partner, Stacie Alexiou, of Ft. Schuyler, NY; 16 grandchildren, Justin P., Madeline A., Jack W. and Grace Mahanna, Emily, Sarah and Rebecca Johnson, Tara, Josh, Nicholas and Hannah Olin, Benjamin Brady, and Jacob, Molly and Matthew Livingston; one brother and his wife, John and Marilyn Hannah, of Whitesboro, NY; and two brothers-in-law, John Parish and William K. Crane, of Marcy, NY. He also leaves many nieces, nephews and cousins. Bill was predeceased by his parents; one son, Nicholas J., in 1968; one grandson, William A. Johnson, in 2007; two sisters, Irene Donlon and Mary Rose Parish; and one brother, James Mahanna. Mr. Mahanna's family would like to make a special thank you to our family friend, Joan Thomas, and to the Barneveld Fire Dept. and Ambulance Corps. Mr. Mahanna's funeral will be held Monday, July 20, 2009, at 10:00 from the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Rd., N. Utica, and at 11:00 St. Leo's-St. Ann's Church, Holland Patent, where his Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. His burial will take place in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Whitestown. Calling hours at the funeral home will be held Sunday evening, July 19, from 4-7. In lieu of flowers, in Bill's memory, donations would be appreciated to the ARC of Oneida-Lewis Co. or a charity of your choice.
