Robert "Rabbit" J. Smith, 70 of Larchmont Ave, Utica passed away at his home on April 15, 2009. Bob was born in Utica, NY February 2, 1939, the son of Otis and Catherine Houlihan Smith. He was raised and educated in Utica, and later attended Fire Training School. On April 25, 1959, Bob was married to Doris Cousin. For a number of years until his retirment in 1980, he was employed as a fireman with the City of Utica. He later became employed with US Materials Handling of Schuyler, retiring in 2007. Bob was a member of St. Peter's Church, N. Utica, American Legion Post 229 of Utica, Glass Hills Golf Course and Engine 11. Rabbit's enjoyment was most spent at his camp at White Lake. He is survived by his wife, Doris; one daughter and son-in-law, Lorraine and Joseph Foley of Billerica, MA; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Mark Smith of Utica and David and Melodie Smith of Queensbury, NY; five cherished grandchildren, Joseph, Katelyn, and Brian Foley and Amanda and Zachary Smith; He leaves one brother and his wife, Otis and Jean Smith of Lake Marraine, NY; two sisters-in-law, Annette Smith of Whitesboro and Jeanne Heintz of Utica; three brothers-in-law and their wives, Louis and Sue Cousin of CA, Edward and Dymphna Cousin of Largrangeville, NY and Jerry and Debbie Cousin of PA. He also leaves several nieces, nephews and cousins. Bob was predeceased by one brother, Brian Smith and a brother-in-law, James Heintz. His family would like to make a special thank you to Dr. Booth and his staff and to Kathy Smyth of Hospice for all their care and compassion. Mr. Smith's funeral will be held Monday, April 20, 2009 at 8:30 from the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Rd., N. Utica and at St. Peter's Church at 9:00 a.m. where his Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated. His burial will take place in Calvary Cemetery, Utica. Calling hours at the funeral home will be held Sunday afternoon from 3-6. Donations in Bob's memory will be appreciated to Hospice and Palliative Care of New Hartford, or to Hope House of Utica.
