Obituary of William P. May

William P. May, 90, of North Utica, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, January 6, 2008, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Utica. Bill was born October 27, 1918 in New York City, the son of William B. and Evelyn (O'Shea) May. He was raised and educated locally, graduating from St. Francis de Sales High School in June of 1936. In 1937, Bill went to work for Utica Mutual Insurance Company. He retired in 1983 as a vice president of the company. In December of 1941, Bill joined the US Army Air Corps serving his country during World War II with HQ, VII Bomber Command at Hickam Field, Hawaii and on the islands of Funafuti, Tarawa, Kwajalein, Saipan, Guam, and Okinawa. He attained the rank of M/Sgt and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. He was discharged from active duty in October of 1945. On October 25, 1947, Bill was joined in marriage to Mary Janet Latus at Our Lady of Lourdes Church by Monsignor Joseph Luker, uncle of the bride. Also in October of 1947, Bill continued his military service by joining the Air Force Reserves. In 1956, he was awarded a commission as Captain. Bill retired from the military in 1964 as a Major after 20 years of service. Bill was a member of the Air Force Association, of the Military Officers of America, and of American Legion Post 1376, New Hartford. He was a member of Historic Old St. John's Church in Utica. Bill thoroughly enjoyed the winter month spent in Florida for 18 years with his wife and their friends after his retirement. He had several hobbies, including counted cross-stitch, crossword puzzles, cryptograms, and Sudoku puzzles. Bill is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Mary Cathleen and James Crimmer, Baldwinsville, Susan E. May, Baldwinsville; two sons and daughters-in-law, W. Patrick and Paula Ann May II, Utica, Dr. Stephen D. and Elizabeth May, Clinton. Also surviving are seven cherished grandchildren. He is predeceased by his wife, Mary Janet in 2005, and by four brothers, George, Frank, Edward, and Richard. Mr. May's funeral will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2009 at 10:00 am at Historic Old St. John's Church, Utica where his Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will take place in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Whitestown. Relatives and friends may call at the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Road, North Utica, on Friday from 4 - 7 pm. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may donate to Historic Old St. John's Memorial Fund or to Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc., in Bill's memory.
