Obituary of Thomas W. Cosgrove

Thomas W. Cosgrove, 82, of Clinton, passed away Thursday, December 18, 2008 at his home after a yearlong illness. Tom was born in Utica on November 13, 1926, the son of Jeremiah and Anne (Brooks) Cosgrove. He attended a one-room schoolhouse in Clinton and graduated from Clinton Central High School in 1943. After his graduation, Tom went to work on the family farm, eventually taking over. He continued working with his son Michael, until he had to retire due to his illness. On June 13, 1953, Tom married Mary Louise Karl. Mrs. Cosgrove passed away in 1993. Tom was a member of St. Mary's Church in Clinton and sang in the choir for over 60 years. He was an avid bowler, bowling in the Clinton A' league on Monday nights and later at Vista Lanes for 60 years. Tom was also an enthusiastic golfer, especially in his retirement. He enjoyed playing at Hamilton College and Crystal Springs, as well as in Florida and the Carolinas on his annual trip south. Tom is survived by his seven children and their spouses, Michael and Ruth Cosgrove, Clinton, Mary and Dominick Militano, Scotia, Kathleen Cosgrove and Harry Parker, Hampton, NJ, Jerry Cosgrove and Judith Anderson, Kinderhook, Peter Cosgrove and Tracey Williams, Delmar, Ellen Cosgrove and Michael Adams, Queensbury, Thomas and Jennifer Cosgrove, Longmeadow, MA; his 14 grandchildren, Anna and Patrick Cosgrove, Sara, Marie, and Tommy Militano, Emily Parker, Megan Cosgrove, Kevin Cosgrove, Rachel, Rebecca, Jessica, Lauren, and Nicole Adams, and Thomas (Will) Cosgrove III. Tom also leaves Tracey's children, Jamie and Robert Williams. He is survived by three siblings and their spouses, Clare and Richard Gaffney, Syracuse, John and Nuala Cosgrove, Clinton, Mary Cosgrove, Clinton; In-laws, Peter and Marjorie Karl, Utica; Mary Karl, Utica, and Joan Hogenkamp, Rutland, VT. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Tom was predeceased by his sister and brother-in-law, Eileen and Edward Bogan, and his in-laws, Sydney Karl, Danny and Maureen Montano, Frances Karl, Jack Karl, and Bill Hogankamp. Mr. Cosgrove's funeral will be held Monday, December 22, 2008 at 10:00 am at St. Mary's Church, Clinton where his Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will take place in St. Mary's Parish Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the Heintz Funeral Home, 10 East Park Row, Clinton on Sunday, from 2 - 4, and 7 - 9 pm. Those wishing may donate to St. Mary's Church for the church choir or to the Kirkland Town Library in Tom's memory.
