Mary J. Szczerba, 101 of The Pine at Utica (Eden Park) and a resident of Yorkville for 71 years, passed away Monday August 4, 2008. Mary was born in Utica on July 4, 1907 a daughter of Frank and Josephine Kadlubowski and received her education in local schools. At St. Stanislaus Church, Utica on June 9, 1928 Mary was united in marriage to Andrew J. Szczerba, a blessed union of 53 years until his passing away on June 18, 1981. For many years she was employed with the Utica Duxbak Co. Mary was a member of Sacred Heart Church until its closing and the Yorkville Highlanders. In 2002 Mary was honored as the oldest resident in Yokville, she had lived there since 1938. Mary is survived by her daughter and son-in-law; Pauline and Douglas Schaaf, Whitesboro, three grandchildren and spouses; Karen and Robert Pettigrew, New York Mills, Linda and Richard Metzler, Remsen, and Thomas Schaaf, Utica, five great grandchildren; Allison, Erin and Nicole Metzler and Jeffrey and Kelly Pettigrew, special nieces and nephew; Lillian Durfee, PA, Robert Pitera and wife Betty, VA, and Anthony Kadlabowski, MD and many other nieces and nephews. Mary was predeceased by a sister; Frances Pitera and husband, Tony and a brother; Anthony Kadlabowski and wife Grace. Mrs. Szczerba's funeral will be held on Thursday August 7, 2008 at 12:15 from the Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica and at 1:00 from The Church of The Sacred Heart and St. Mary Our Lady of Czestochowa, New York Mills. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Whitesboro. Calling hours at the funeral home are Wednesday (Today) from 4-7. Those so wishing may make donations to the Yorkville Highlanders or The Pines at Utica in Mary's memory. The family would to extend a heartfelt thanks to entire staff of The Pines and especially to Mary's granddaughter Linda Metzler for all the loving care given to her during her stay there.
