Mr. Thomas A. Smith, Jr., 89 a resident of the Presbyterian Home for CNY, formerly of Sunnyside Dr., Utica passed away on Saturday January 5, 2008 at the nursing home. Thomas was born in Utica on June 2, 1918 the son of Thomas A. and Sophie E. (Dux) Smith Sr. He was raised and educated locally and earned his bachelor's degree from Babson College in Wellesley, MA. He honorably served in the Army Air Corps during WW II. On August 15, 1942 Thomas married Priscilla Grant, a blessed union of 60 years until Priscilla's death in 2002. For many years he was self employed as a general contractor with Bradford Hills Development Corporation in New Hartford. In his early years, Thomas was an accomplished speed skater and was the recipient of many honors and awards. He was a long time member of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, a member of American Legion Utica Post 229, N. Utica and a parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Church, New Hartford. Mr. Smith is survived by a daughter, Suzanne S. Bowley, Utica; son and daughter-in-law, David C. and Deborah Smith, Manlius, NY; two grandchildren and their spouses, Robert C. and Atsuko Bowley and Aimee B. and Michael Scanlon and four great grandchildren, Grant, Grace and Christina Bowley and Parker Scanlon. He was predeceased by a sister, Marguerite Hill. Relative and friends are invited to attend Mr. Smith's memorial mass of Christian burial on Saturday January 19, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church in New Hartford. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. Please omit floral offerings and consider a donation to a charity of your choice in Thomas' memory.
