Obituary of Rose Smith

Mrs. Rose M. Smith 93, a resident of the Presbyterian Home for CNY, formerly of Floyd Ave, Deerfield passed away peacefully Wednesday January 30, 2008 at the nursing home with her loving family by her side. Rose was born in Utica on January 12, 1915 the daughter of Saverio and Maria (Antonia) Abiusi and received her education in local schools. On June 26, 1948, Rose married Charles Smith in St. Patrick's Church in Utica, a loving union of 32 years until Charles' death in 1982. At one time, Rose was employed with Utica Knitting Mills. She was a long time parishioner of St. Peter's Church in N. Utica and enjoyed reading and baking. A loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister, Rose received her greatest joy from spending time with her family. Mrs. Smith is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Garry J. Smith and his companion Michele LaPaglia, Whitestown, Larry A. and Lena Smith, Marcy and Grace Smith, Fairport, NY; one sister, Lena Massella, NJ; eight cherished grandchildren, Kristen Smith, Chesapeake, VA, Kurt Smith, Fairport, Garry Smith, Dallas, TX, Robert Apel and his wife Shannon, Whitesboro, Michael Apel, Marcy and David Smith, Ryan Smith, and Kevin Smith all of Marcy; one beloved great grand daughter, Dionna Apel and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Charles S. Smith in November 2007, two sisters, Mary and Theresa, one brother, James and her best friend, Gucci Carone. Mrs. Smith's funeral will be held on Monday February 4, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. from the Heintz Funeral Home 408 Herkimer Rd., N. Utica and 11:00 at St. Peter's Church where her mass of christian burial will be celebrated. A spring interment will be held in Arlington National Cemetery where she will be laid to rest with her beloved husband Charles. Calling hours for family and friends are Sunday 1:00-4:00 p.m. Those so wishing may consider a donation to The Presbyterian Home in Rose's memory. Mrs. Smith's family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the Staff of the Presbyterian home especially the Cedar Unit and Birch Unit for the care and compassion given to Rose.
