Obituary of Dorothy A. Schmalz

Please share a memory of Dorothy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Dorothy Ann Schmalz (89) passed away into the hands of the Lord in the comfort of her home surrounded by her loving family on December 7, 2018. Dorothy was born in Utica on February 21, 1929 to Harry J. Springer and Ann Welpe Springer. She was a graduate of Utica Free Academy and Harcum College in Bryn Mawr, PA. where she earned a degree in Journalism. Following graduation, she obtained a position as Assistant to the Editor at the Utica Daily Press. On August 12, 1950, she married William (Bill) Schmalz and they shared 68 loving, devoted and adventurous years together. After raising their five children, Dorothy continued her career with the establishment of Schmalz Mechanical Contractors with her husband and children. She continued to work in this business until her recent retirement. Dorothy had a strong and devoted faith and was a parishioner of St. Pauls’ Church. She was a member of the Yahnundasis Golf Club for 62 years, active in bridge club, golf, bowling and the Debonair’s Club as well as countless fund-raising activities at St. Paul’s and Notre Dame Boosters. Dorothy was the biggest supporter of her children and would never miss her children’s school activities, sporting events and honor/award ceremonies. Dorothy had a vivacious spirit and a love of travel. She traveled with her husband and her family to numerous destinations including Hawaii, Germany, England, France and Italy. She also showed her desire for adventure when she and her family went to the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics. She also greatly enjoyed the time spent in the Adirondacks with her family. Dorothy was the family historian, collecting impeccable detail of events and family members. She was gracious to everyone who came through her door. She welcomed them with open arms and a beautiful smile. She was the keeper of family traditions and memories. The “spur of the moment” backyard parties and the holiday traditions were amazing and meant so much as her family surrounded her. She hosted a yearly Thanksgiving dinner with an annual football game that was so famous that the local TV station filmed the family game. The highlight of Dorothy’s year was Christmas Eve. The whole house sparked with her love, joy and happiness. People came to experience the camaraderie and love she gave out with the holiday spirit of Christmas. Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, and her brother Donald Springer. She is survived by her devoted husband, Bill, her five children: Sheron Marche’ (Bruce), Richard (Kathleen), Mark (Barbara), Stephen (Edythe) and Susan Novak (David), 9 grandchildren: William Marche’ (Kylene), Peter Marche’ (Sarah) and Kristen Storey (Jeffrey), Melissa and Abigail Schmalz, Kathryn Schmalz (Kyler Gibb) and Jonathon Schmalz and Lauren and Mark Novak. She is blessed to have 6 great grandchildren: Simon and Elliot Marche’, Riley Marche’, Mariah and Caleb Storey and Everly Gibb. We know that we will all miss Dorothy. Her passing will leave a big hole in our hearts. We know that we are good at what we do because of what Dorothy taught us, we love what we love because of the experiences that she gave us and we are who we are because of how she loved us.
