Mary H. Miller New Hartford Mary Holland Miller, 93, a resident of the Presbyterian Home for CNY, formerly of Washington Mills, NY and Columbia, SC, passed away Saturday, September 15, 2007 at the home. Mary was born in Utica, NY on June 24, 1914, the daughter of Thomas Francis and Catherine (Daily) Holland. She was raised and educated in Utica, graduating from St. Francis de Sales High School, Utica. Mary then went on to become a nurse, educated from St. John's Hospital in Long Island. She returned to the Utica area where she was employed by Faxton Hospital and for many years at St. Elizabeth Hospital. On July 1, 1939, Mary married Joseph F. Miller in St. Patrick's Church, Utica. Mr. Miller passed away in 1979. When living in Utica, Mary belonged to Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Utica, and after moving to Columbia, SC, she became a member of Our Lady of the Hills Church. She belonged to several organizations, including, the Catholic Nurses Association, the JOY Group and the Seniors Group in Columbia. Mary will be remembered as a "take charge" person, who was devoted to her work, but when she did find time to relax, she especially enjoyed camping at Eighth Lake in the Adirondacks. Mary is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Robert Derajtys, Columbia, SC, Mary Louise and Richard Miller, Barneveld, NY, Carol Anne and Louis Musante, Madison, CT; six grandchildren, Joseph Derajtys and his wife, Nancy, Andrew Derajtys, Marnie Musante, Gregory Miller, Allison Miller, Kathleen Scott and her husband, David. Also surviving are six cherished great grandchildren; her sister, Helen Lyons, Indiana; her brother and sister-in-law, Robert (Dutch) and Elaine Holland, Syracuse, NY. She is predeceased by a sister, Catherine Flint, and a brother, John (Jack) Holland. Mary's funeral will be held Thursday, September 20, 2007 at 9:15 am from the Heintz Funeral Service, Inc., 1517 Whitesboro Street, Utica and at 10:00 am in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Utica where her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will follow in St. Agnes Cemetery, Utica. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday evening from 4 ? 7 pm. Those wishing may donate to Transfiguration Church in Blythewood, SC or to St. Elizabeth School of Nursing in Mary's memory. The family extends a special thanks to the nurses and staff of the Maple Unit of the Presbyterian Home for CNY, for the excellent care and many kindnesses shown to Mary and her family during her stay.
