Obituary of Harold C. Heintz
Please share a memory of Harold to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Dr. Harold C. Heintz Clinton Dr. Harold Heintz died on Saturday, September 1, 2007 at the age of 83. He died as he had lived, with dignity and courage, with his wife of 59 years, Suzanne, and his devoted family surrounding him. An optimistic man of unwavering strength, Harold Heintz had a powerful influence upon his family and his community. After serving in World War II, he came back to the area that he loved, where he practiced medicine for nearly forty years. He brought innovative radiological services to his community and wisdom and compassion to his patients. The father of eight children and grandfather of twelve, he cared for his family with the same commitment, sense of fairness and devotion that he brought to his community. Born in Utica on May 18, 1924 to William John Heintz and Kathryn Clemens Heintz, he was the youngest of five children and is preceded by sisters Ruth and Dorothea and brothers Herbert and Edward. He graduated from Utica Free Academy and went on to Hamilton College where his studies were interrupted by World War II. After serving as a commissioned Ensign on the USS Randolph, he returned to graduate from Hamilton College in 1947 and earn his medical degree at Syracuse University School of Medicine in 1951. He married Suzanne Owens on August 21, 1948 and four children were born by the time he completed his internship and residency in Radiology at Philadelphia General Hospital (1952-55), where he was chosen chief resident. In 1955, Harold returned to Utica as a partner in a private radiology practice and served as both a Radiologist and Radiation Oncologist. He traveled to many of the small town hospitals across western New York where he responded to every call with commitment and a sense of duty. He brought state of the art medicine to the region with the establishment of Four County Radiation Medicine. He created the region's first facility dedicated exclusively to the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, The Community Mammography Center. Also, with characteristic vision, he conceived of and formed the first local Cooperative Magnetic Imaging group. His approach to medicine was to deliver the most advanced and accurate diagnosis and treatment, while making his patients feel secure and hopeful. His indelible signature endures on the landscape of healthcare in his community. His efforts in the field of medicine were recognized with his induction as a fellow of the American College of Radiology and by the humanitarian award which he received from The World Mercy Fund for his contributions to the advancement of Radiology in economically deprived South American countries. In 1955 he and Suzanne bought a house on Norton Avenue where they raised a large family of six girls and two boys. The house was filled with energy and love. He took a personal interest in all of his children and grandchildren. He had an uncanny ability to teach the young, whether it was the correct meaning of a word, the proper swing a golf club, how to spot a bird hidden in a tree, or how to put the other guy first. Dr. Heintz's last years were spent giving back to the local community, as a mentor to his children and grandchildren and as an extraordinary husband. For all of his accomplishments and for his generous and optimistic spirit he will be hugely missed. Harold is survived by his wife, Suzanne Heintz, and his children, Deborah, Kristy, Matsie, Harold Jr., Judy, Andrew, Elizabeth, Suzie and their spouses, and his twelve grandchildren, Hannah, Elliot, Sam, Kara, Will, Andrew, Harold III (Boe), Forest, Luc, Charlie, Emily and Sophie. Dr. Heintz's funeral will be held on Friday, September 7, 2007 at 10:30 am in St. Mary's Church, Clinton, where his Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will take place in St. Mary's Cemetery, Clinton. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Heintz Funeral Home, 10 East Park Row, Clinton on Thursday evening from 4 ? 6 pm.
