Obituary of Gail P. Wittman

Please share a memory of Gail to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Gail P. Wittman, 68, passed away to eternal rest and comfort in our Lord on April 18, 2007. She put up a brave and strong fight against her chronic illnesses and died after an extended hospitalization at St. Luke's Hospital in New Hartford. Her children, family and "girlfriends" surrounded her bedside and remained amazed and inspired by her ability to persevere and face death gracefully. Gail was born on August 26, 1938 to Genevieve K. Newton and the late Ernest F. Newton. She graduated from Utica Free Academy in 1956 and here formed lasting friendships with her sorority sisters, "The Jolly Girls". She married Ralph E. Wittman on April 12, 1958. The couple resided in Utica, Prospect and Barneveld, NY where Ralph made comfortable homes for Gail and their children. Ralph predeceased Gail on September 23, 2002. Gail enjoyed interacting with people and told great stories about one of her first jobs working at Neisner's Lunch Counter with her other West Utica girlfriends. After high school graduation, she worked at Griffiss Air Force Base as a secretary before she and Ralph started their family. She returned to work in 1974 as a real estate agent after her children were in school and enjoyed the process of finding the perfect home for her clients. She laughed and worked hard with many real estate associates until her retirement in 1998. She was especially fond of her boss, Mr. Jerry Orseo. Gail is survived by her sweet mother, Genevieve Newton of New York Mills; her sister, Judy F. Fero of Utica, and her sister and brother-in-law, Penny and E. Larry Burlingame of Marcellus, NY; her four adoring children; Kelly L. Latus and her husband Tom of Barneveld, NY; Tracy A. Dewoody and her husband, Michael of Cicero, NY; R. Eric Wittman and his wife, Renon of Arvada, CO and her son Christopher J. Wittman of Ashburn, VA. Gail lavished her love and affection on her seven grandchildren; Matthew and Jamie Latus, Abigail and Ben Dewoody, and Walker, Will and Sarah Wittman. Gail enjoyed gatherings with her friends and family, and loved to cook and bake. She will be remembered for her warm and cheerful spirit and all the joy and thoughtfulness she extended to others. She was always one to consider and care for others before her own needs. She enriched the lives of so many with her love and loyal friendship. Gail was a member of St. David's Episcopal Church in Barneveld. She was saddened to move from her "Peaceful Pines" in Barneveld after her husband's death, but embraced her new home and friends at the Sunset Woods Apartments in New Hartford where she attended Bible study and had an active social life. The family would like to extend our thanks and gratitude to the dedicated and caring professionals who cared for our mother over the years; the entire staff on the 4th floor of St. Luke's Hospital who made our mother comfortable over the past weeks; Dr. Bhisham Garg and staff, (Especially nurse Arlene), Dr. Kevin Nelson, Dr. Margarita Perez-Cheron, Dr. Mark Blaker and Dr. Stanley Weiselberg. Mrs. Wittman's funeral service will be held on Sunday April 22, 2007 at 1:00 at St. David's Episcopal Church, Mappa Ave., Barneveld. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Barneveld. Calling hours for Mrs. Wittman will be held on Saturday April 21, 2007 from 2-4 & 6-8 at the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Rd., North Utica.
