Obituary of Peter V. Irving

Peter V. Irving, 82, of New Hartford, formerly of Utica, passed away on Saturday, December 8, 2018 at his home. Peter was born in Utica on August 19, 1936, a son of Henry and Mary (White) Irving. He received is education from the good Nuns, Brothers and Priests of St. Francis de Sales School. Peter proudly served his country with the US Army from 1955-1957, including a tour in Korea. At Blessed Sacrament Church, on April 12, 1958, Peter was united in marriage to Jeanne Van Schaick, his high school sweetheart, a blessed union of 53 years until her passing in 2011. Peter was appointed to the Utica Fire Dept in 1959 and rose through the ranks and in 1985 he assumed command of the Fire Marshal’s office. He retired in 1982 with the rank and title of Chief Fire Marshal, completing a career of 32 years. Peter was a member of St. Thomas More Church in Utica. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #189, Association of Professional Police and Fire Retirees and was a chairman and teacher at St. Michael’s Traditional Catechetical Center and St. Thomas More Chapel. Peter was survived by four sons, Mark and wife, Denise, of Lincoln City, OR, Scott and wife, Marybeth, of Syracuse, Eric, of Utica and Todd, of Clay; a daughter, Tracey Bradley; nine grandchildren; a brother, Jack, of New Hartford; in-laws, Shirley (Brown) Irving, of Clermont, FL, Judy (Van Schaick) Posila and husband, Marty and Frank Maurizio, of Utica. Peter was predeceased by an infant son, Michael; a daughter, Jill Irving, in 2018; two sisters, Cynthia, in 1949 and Rosemary Maurizio, in 2017 and a brother, Donald in 2003. Calling hours for Mr. Irving will be held on Wednesday, December 12, 2018, from 4-7 at the Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica. A Traditional Latin Requiem Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, December 13, 2018 at 10:00 at St. Thomas More Tradtional Roman Catholic Chapel. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Those so wishing may make donations to St. Thomas More Chapel or Hospice and Palliative Care in Peter’s memory.
