Edwin Thomas Smith, 82, of North Utica passed away peacefully at home Thursday evening September 20, 2007 with his loving family by his side. Edwin was born in Santa Monica, CA on December 12, 1924 a son of Frank Irving and Edna Elizabeth (Risley) Smith. He was a graduate of Hancock High School in Hancock, NY, was in the first graduating class from Utica College and later received his Masters degree from Syracuse University. Edwin served in the Navy during World War II and after the war the Naval Reserves, retiring as a Lieutenant JG. Edwin married Louise Shanfelter in Montrose, PA on June 7, 1949. They had a blessed union of 58 years. Edwin was employed with the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance for 33 years until his retirement in 1983. He was also a Professor of Accounting at Utica College, MVCC and HCCC. He returned to the Tax Department in 1998 as a part-time employee during the Income Tax season. Edwin was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, the current Secretary of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Aerie #97, Deerfield, Ilion Moose Lodge # 1010, American Legion Post #229, Schuyler VFW Post # 8728, the Utica Bridge League, Masonic Oriental Lodge, Ziyara Temple, Sons of the American Revolution, Association of Public Accountants, O.M.C.E., and the Razorback Fish and Game Club where he enjoyed hunting, fishing and racing snowmobiles. Edwin was an energetic youth leader. He was a Boy Scout Leader, managed Little League, Colt League and American Legion Baseball winning championships at all levels. He was awarded the 2007 Legends of American Legion Baseball Award for his work in forming the Post 229 baseball team. Edwin is survived by his wife Louise and sons Edwin Allen and Scott Thomas. He was predeceased by his cherished and beloved son David Austin who passed away on June 17th of this year. He is also survived by Allen's wife, Sandy, grandchildren, Jonathan and Tanya, great-grandchildren, Averill and Reagan, Scott's wife, Marie, grandchildren, Jamie and April, David's wife, Joanne, grandchildren, Brianne and Cory, and a sister, Emalyn Bidwell. The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the Presbyterian Home, Hospice and Palliative Care, and Caregivers for their care and compassion. Also, thanks to Edwin's enormous stable of Doctors. A special thank you to Dr. Jerry Sloan and his wonderful staff. A memorial service for Mr. Smith will be held on Monday September 24, 2007 at 10:00 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 25 Oxford Rd., New Hartford. Calling hours for Mr. Smith will be held on Sunday from 3-6 at the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Road, North Utica. Interment will be at the West Schuyler Cemetery at the family's convenience. Donations in Edwin's memory may be made to St. Stephen's Church or Hospice and Palliative Care Inc.
