Elmer C. Knapp Sylvan Beach Elmer C. Knapp, 87, of Sylvan Beach, formerly of Utica, passed away at the Rome Hospital January 16, 2007. Elmer was born in Utica, NY, October 26, 1919, son of Charles and Elizabeth Thomas Knapp. He was raised and educated in Utica and was a graduate of UFA. On July 25, 1940 in Utica, Elmer was married to Thelma C. Campbell. Mrs. Knapp passed away in 2003. A carpenter most of his life, Elmer was employed at the Local #747 Carpenters Union until his retirement. Prior, with his wife, he was the owner and operator of Elmer's Restaurant on Court Street in Utica. He was a member of St. John's Church, North Bay, St. Mary's Church, Verona Beach, and a former member of St. Joseph-St. Patrick's Church in Utica. Elmer was a family man. He enjoyed outside activities with his children and grandchildren, and loved playing and teaching his family horseshoes. He was an Oneida League County Horseshoe Champion. An avid sports fan, he loved to watch baseball and basketball, especially the SU Orangemen. He was also a member of the "Cozy Corner Gang" of Schuyler Street. Elmer is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Diane and William Brody of Sylvan Beach, Denise and Randy Chandler of Blossvale, NY; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Norman W. Knapp of Camden, NY, Douglas and Linda (Decker) Knapp of West Winfield, NY; a daughter-in-law, Michaela Donlon Knapp of Sylvan Beach; 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; one sister and brother-in-law, June and Vincent Suskie of Bradenton, FL; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Knapp of Rochester; and a brother and sister-in-law, Douglas and Elly Campbell of Utica. He also leaves several nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, Elmer was predeceased by two sons, James in 2004, and Robert in 2006; one sister, Beatrice Price; and one brother, Leo Knapp. Mr. Knapp's funeral will be held Friday, January 19, 2007, at 10:15 from the Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica, and at 11:00 at St. Joseph-St. Patrick's Church, Utica, where his Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. His burial will take place in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Whitestown, NY. Calling hours at the funeral home will be held this evening, January 18, 2007, from 4 to 7 p.m. Donations in Elmer's memory would be appreciated to the charity of your choice.
