Derek C. Markis, 22, of Clinton, formerly of Utica, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 4, 2008 at the Seigenthaler Center, with his loving family by his side. Derek was born in Utica on April 2, 1985, the son of Arthur and Kathleen (Roback) Markis. He was raised and educated locally, graduating from Proctor High School. Derek worked at Eden Park Nursing Home in Utica. On March 4, 2008, before his passing, Derek fulfilled his wish and married Samantha El Khoury. He was an avid sports fan, especially of Nascar and Hockey. He will always be remembered as someone who loved walking to get around, rather than getting in a car. At times he would walk across the city to get places. Another, he loved the news, especially CNN. He could watch for hours, no matter who begged him to change the channel. Derek is survived by his beloved wife, Samantha Markis, Clinton; two cherished sons, Elliot and Matthieu Markis, Clinton; his parents, Arthur and Kathleen Markis, Utica; his brother, with whom he shared a special bond, Aaron Markis, Utica; his maternal grandparents, Ron and Jeanne Roback, Clinton. Also surviving are several aunts, uncles, and cousins, as well as two canine companions, Tahoe and Checkers. He is predeceased by his paternal grandparents, Arthur and Erma Markis. Derek's funeral will take place on Saturday, March 8, 2008 at 10:00 am at St. Mary's Church in Clinton where his Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment in Forest Hill Cemetery, Utica, will take place at the convenience of the family. Relatives and friends may call at the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Road, North Utica on Friday from 4 ? 7 pm. Those wishing may donate to Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc., or to the American Cancer Society in Derek's memory.
