Arlene M. Wood Slade, 86 of Utica passed away Thursday November 8, 2007 at St. Joseph's Nursing Home after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's Disease. Arlene was born on Meadow St. in New York Mills on April 18, 1921, the daughter of Joseph and Marie (Sangregoria) Wood. She graduated from Utica Free Academy class of 1939 and St. Elizabeth's School of Nursing in 1942. Arlene used her nursing skills throughout her personal and professional life. After serving in the U.S. Navy at Brooklyn Navel Hospital, Arlene was married to Samuel F. Slade on December 16, 1945. Sam passed away in 1990. Arlene lived life to the fullest and was loved by everyone who met her. She loved to bowl and held many trophies and awards throughout the years. Arlene was an active member of the local AARP and co-hosted many trips. She had a love of dancing with her friend and dance partner Gordon Lallier. After raising her children and caring for her husband Arlene returned to nursing first at the old Sunset Home, then on to her beloved St. Joseph's Nursing Home. She found her true calling working with the elderly, "her residents" as she called them. She was not only loved by them, but their families and the staff. Upon her retirement in 2001 at age 80 Arlene had earned the title of RN Supervisor and the respect and admiration of those around her. Arlene was a parishioner of Historic Old St. John's Church, Utica, St. Elizabeth's Alumni Assoc., Railroad Ladies Aux, and the 721st CBI Military Railroad Brigade. Arlene is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law; Katie and Robert Jones, Sauquoit, NY, and Nancy and Ed Barry, SC, five sons and three daughters-in-law; Samuel and Patty Slade III, Clinton, NY, Edward Slade, Massena, NY, David and Ellen Slade, CA, Andrew and Sharon Slade, Albany, NY, and Donald Slade, Liverpool, NY, 15 grandchildren; Richard and wife Robin Jones, David K. Jones, Scott E. Jones, Samantha Slade, Gloria Slade, Samuel Slade IV, Michael Miller, Eric Miller, Bridgett Slade, Nicole Slade, Monica Slade, Korinne Slade, Nicholas Slade, Edward Slade II, and Emily M. Slade, two cousins; Delores Mundschenk and Marilyn Sprague, an aunt; Rose Sangregoria and 17 great grandchildren. Mrs. Slade's funeral will be held Monday November 12, 2007 at 9:15 from the Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica and at 10:00 from Historic Old St. John's Church, Utica. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Whitesboro. Calling hours at the funeral home are Sunday from 4-8. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to your favorite charity in Arlene's memory. Please omit flowers.
