Obituary of Alice Knutty
Please share a memory of Alice to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
June 22, 2008 "If I die tonight I have had a marvelous life, I want you to know that!" Alice, 98, passed into heaven to be with the Lord on June 23 at Stonehedge Health and Rehabilitation Center in Rome, NY where she had resided for the last year of her precious life. She was born April 11, 1910 in Newport, NY the daughter of James and Margaret Maxwell. Alice was educated in Newport schools and started her education for teaching at 17 years of age at Clinton Training Center and Potsdam Normal School. She worked as a teacher throughout her life starting at 18 years of age in Irish Settlement School in Newport. She later taught in the Whitesboro school system for 38 years. In retirement she volunteered at St. Francis de Sales school 3 days a week for 10 years. After that she volunteered at the ARC Thrift Shop for 15 plus years retiring in May 2007 at the age of 97. In her later years Alice was recognized as the YWCA senior Citizen of the year and the volunteer of the year at the ARC. Alice was predeceased by her husband John S. Knutty in November 1987. She was also predeceased by three brothers and sisters-in-law, James Maxwell (Dorothy), Dennis Maxwell (Doris) and Donald Maxwell (Jo); and seven sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary Bowen (Clark), Nelli McNamera (Leo), Irene Maxwell, Louise Carney (Al), Gertrude Santmire (Ray), Grace Carney (Vic) and Florence Wilson (Mike). "Aunt" Alice leaves numerous nieces and nephews and their families. With no children of their own, she and Uncle John spent much of their time and resources helping out whenever possible. We were all extremely lucky to have them in our lives and hope to inherit Aunt Alice's great genes. She also leaves many friends at the ARC thrift store and friends who helped her out in her later years, Helen Musa, Claire Biedrzycki, Donna Zawtocki, Dick and Mary Waldron and Thelma Reimnan. It is impossible to thank enough the many people at Stonehedge Health and Rehabilitation Center which Alice loved as her own. The family wishes to extend grateful appreciation to the food service department, the housekeeping and maintenance departments, the hair dresser, the rehab and recreation departments, the medical staff, the certified nursing assistants and nurses who cared so deeply for Alice. She leaves behind many precious new "friends" Mrs. Knutty's funeral will be held on Thursday June 26, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of The Rosary Church on Burrstone Rd. New Hartford.
