Anne Irene Remis, a lifelong resident of Clinton, NY, passed away March 27, 2008. She was the daughter of Frank and Anna Jurcisian Remis; a communicant of St. Mary's Church; and an Associate Redemptorist. Educated in the Clinton schools, she received her Bachelor's Degree from SUNY Oswego and her Master's Degree from SUNY College for Teachers at Buffalo in 1949, majoring in education of physically-handicapped children. She was appointed to establish a demonstration school for research in cerebral palsy at the Edith Hartwell Clinic in LeRoy, NY, under the auspices of the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry where she developed techniques in teaching multiply-handicapped children. Her first book, "Aphonic Communication for Those with Cerebral Palsy", was published in 1960. It was the precursor of the modern electronic devices for communication for children with speech or hand use. In 1953, she accepted a position in the Rochester City Schools (schools #5 and #29). She taught with firmness to cope with problems and with affection because there is no alternative, without love, to effective teaching. She was a critic teacher for SUNY Buffalo students; conducted classes for multiply-handicapped children at Columbia University summer sessions, and led in-service work for New York City teachers of Special Classes in 1955. Miss Remis was a member of the New York State Retired Teachers' Association and Rochester Teachers' Association, alum of SUNY College at Buffalo, and a member of the Clinton and Saranac Lake historical societies, Friends of the Lutheran Homes, and New York State Right to Life. In retirement, she volunteered her services at St. Mary's School in Clinton and tutored children at her home. She studied piano, a life-long wish, under the special direction of Mrs. Barbara W. Newlove. In 2004, she wrote and published "Miss Teach", a memoir of her experiences teaching disabled children. In 2006, CP Rochester (formerly known as Cerebral Palsy Association) inducted Miss Remis into its Wall of Honor. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Grace Remis Jones, and more than one hundred nieces and nephews spanning four generations. She was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy Harvie, and brothers John, Francis, Stephen, and George. She leaves behind many dear friends, especially Marie Bocko and Susan Keller. The family extends their gratitude and thanks to Dr. Roger Norton of the Slocum-Dickson Clinic, Lisbeth Remis Pryor, and all of Anne's loving caregivers. Friends are invited to attend her Mass of Resurrection at St. Mary's Church in Clinton on Tuesday, April 1, 2008 at 10:00 am where liturgy of Christian burial will be celebrated. Interment will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Clinton. There are no calling hours. Those who wish may consider making donations to any charity for children in her memory.
