Gladys Scharff, 99, of New London, NH and formerly of Utica passed away Thursday June 22, 2006 at the Clough Center where she has resided since 2000. Gladys was born in Burlington, VT on March 17, 1907 the daughter of Victor and Anna (Jerome) Dumas. She lived in Burlington while she was small then spent the rest of her life in Utica receiving her education in the Utica School system. In Utica in 1936 Gladys married William Scharff a blessed union of 56 years until his passing in 1992. For many years she was employed as a bookkeeper and secretary with Utica Plumbing Supply and Charles Millar and Sons. Gladys was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church, Utica and Our Lady of Fatima Church, NH. Gladys was an "old fashioned Mom" always in the kitchen and an excellent baker especially of bread. Gladys is survived by a son J. William Scharff, Sunapee, NH, two daughters, Theresa Plumb, Delevan, NY and Monica Gorton, State College, PA, a daughter-in-law, Diane Scharff, Utica, a nephew, Jack Ryan, two nieces, Natalie Armstrong and Diane Krause and 12 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and a great great granddaughter. Gladys was predeceased by an infant son, William L. Scharff, a son Richard Scharff in 1989, a daughter, Janet Marie Scharff in 1958, a grandson Peter Scharff in 2005, a sister, Estelle Ryan and a brother, Richard Steele. Mrs. Scharff's funeral will be held on Monday June 26, 2006 at 10:30 from the Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro St., Utica and at 11:00 from Sacred Heart Church. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Whitesboro. Calling hours at the funeral home are Monday morning from 9:30 to 10:30.
